School was over for the day, and the High School students enrolled in that special school on the campus of Renard University all went home. With no one left to guard, Luc's shift was over, and he returned to the STS Station Head Quarters.
With nothing to kill but time, Luc decided to practice target shooting at the gun range located underground beneath the HQ building. Kylian's insinuation that Luc's job at the High School wasn't real police work still bothered him. Firing his gun always made him feel better.
Bam! Bam! Bam!
Luc shot at three holographic targets made to look like people. He hit each one right in the head.
Bam! Bam! Bam!
He shot at another three holographic targets and blew each of their heads off too. Even though the heads exploded from the gunshots, the computer did not simulate the blood and gore.
With the hologram target session finished, the lights turned on. The computer tallied Luc's score.
"All targets neutralized. Accuracy 100%. Kill rate 100%," said the computerized voice of the gun range.
Luc smirked as he holstered his gun. He was one of the top marksmen in the force and he knew it too. He was surprised to hear a voice address him after his shooting spree.
"You're still one of the best sharpshooters in the force, aren't you Luc?" said an unimpressed Remi Konnard, Capitan of the Guard. "One hundred percent kill rate. Proud of yourself, are you?"
Luc recognized the voice of his superior. "Why thank you, Captain." Luc was smug, but the Captain's eyes were on fire as he glared at Luc.
"But there's just one little problem," pointed out a sarcastic Captain Konnard. "You're supposed to shoot only the bad guys!" he shouted at Luc. "One of those targets was a civilian! And the last one was a dog for heaven's sake! You killed one innocent bystander and one non-target!"
Luc, unrattled, considered those facts for a moment. "Yeah, but my shots were right on the mark. 100% accurate!"
"It doesn't matter how good you are if you kill the wrong people!" Captain Konnard was exasperated with Luc.
"Aw, come on, Captain! I know better than that! This was just a holographic target program. I knew none of those guys were real. I was just frustrated today on my shift and wanted to blow off some steam, so I shot everything that moved!" Luc tried to defend his violent actions.
Captain Konnard slapped his hand to his forehead dragging it down over his face. "Why were you so frustrated today on the job?"
"It's because you have me baby-sitting a bunch of kids at the High School!" protested Luc. "An agent of my talent and experience shouldn't be wasted like that. Let me do something important! Re-assign me to hunt for spies or put me back on patrols. Anything but guarding the High School!"
"I put you there, Agent Luc Coquin, because that's where you could do the least damage!" said Captain Konnard. "You're a troublemaker, Luc. I don't know where else to put you for now."
"But STS brass has raised the threat level to HIGH for the past couple of weeks. Evil's brewing and I can help!" Luc pleaded to be reassigned. Danger was out there!
"All the more reason for you to stay where you are, Agent Luc. I need you there so you'll stay out of the way of my more serious agents so they can do their investigations without you trying to run the show."
"But..."
"No buts, Luc! You're staying on High School duty until the threat level goes back down to NOMINAL. That's an order."
"Yes, sir." Luc grumbled under his breath.
Although Luc agreed to the order to stay on High School duty while the rest of the force chased after the phantom menace in their midst, he did not have to like it.
