So, I had some pretty strong feelings and opinions on season 2. Therefore, I thought I'd do a review of each episode (I just really need to get this out). BEWARE: Season 2 spoilers ahead!
S2E1 - The Frozen Forest: So, this episode I probably liked the least. What I disliked about it was really centered around Frosta's development (as many of you know, I love her). Last season, we saw her as a hardcore, butt-kicking little girl who is just as lethal as the rest of the princesses. However, in this season, she is portrayed as a sort of an annoying little sister who is irresponsible and stupid. I honestly would have been okay with this if Frosta had gotten an actual arc to show why she becomes this way (and it would have made her character more real), but the transition wasn't shown at all; one episode she was one way, and the next, she wasn't. I would really have liked more explanation for this. Also, Frosta was incredibly cringey the entire episode, and I just hated that. However, I did like the bit of Mermista/Perfuma rivalry sort of thing, and how Glimmer, Adora, Catra and Bow grow a little bit. I also think the scene where Frosta and Glimmer sit on a rock and talk it out is really well done. I also like Light Hope. She made me laugh a few times.
S2E2 - Ties That Bind: This was definitely one of my favorites in this season, if not in the whole show. It shows that Glimmer is really a person (and that Bow is super sweet, which we already knew), and it was really interesting to see the interaction between Bow, Glimmer, and Catra. It also goes on to show that Scorpia really cares about Catra. I also liked the Adora/Swift Wind part of this episode."Adora and Swift Wind, on an adventure, fixin' a thing that Mara broke! When she went nuts!" I liked how their relationship developed, and although I think that Swift Wind is a bit annoying, that's just part of his personality, which I can accept. I feel really bad for Bow and Glimmer, because of Entrapta and how Catra is shaming them for it, and I feel bad for Adora, because of how much responsibility she now has. Bow, Glimmer, Catra, and Shadow Weaver as horses were also awesome.
S2E3 - Signals: This was also really good. I really like how the First Ones were just normal people. Also, the Headless Princess and the Weeping Princess and all the stories that Adora were telling was pretty funny. I mostly enjoyed Entrapta this episode, because she is so downright hilarious, and even in the face of the boss, the frightening and ingenious Lord Hordak, she is totally unfazed. I think the lore we get here is pretty good. "He calls his lab a sanctum? Oh, that is so classy!" It was also interesting to see how Bow talks about Entrapta, and comparing himself to her in a way. What I really think was cool was how Hordak had the weird pink thingy that made it hard to breathe, and how he used it on Catra. I think this made him much more real, because it showed that he really had no regard for her life. The whole "Do you know what the definition of failure is?" thing was also really cool.
S2E4 - Roll With It: I did like this episode, I really did, but it was also very cringey at some points. I really like how Adora broke down at the end, and explained her fears to all the other princesses and Bow. This was really a touching moment, and truly shows how stressed, worried, and scared she is. My heart aches for her, and also for Tiny Bow. May he continue to find the strength to smile through his pain! The cringiness comes in with Glimmer, Perfuma, Mermista, and Frosta. I liked Bow's fantasy though: I thought it was a nice throwback to the original. The rest of them though... I can't say the same thing. It made them all seem incredibly immature, and although I know that's good for character development, because they are still growing and learning, it was super hard for me to watch. Although, I find it hilarious what a bad artist Frosta is. I love the way she draws feet. And Mermista was really funny this episode. I really enjoyed the battle at the end, and how the princesses help each other. Sorry I didn't mention it before, but I really liked Scorpia and her team this episode. She is so sweet, and her love for Catra is so pure. Lonnie is clearly the only functional member of the Horde, and she was also great. Kyle and Rogelio, too. I liked that we finally got his name.
S2E5 - White Out: Loved this one, too. Infected Adora is amazing, and it was cool to see her and Infected She-Ra again. The ruthlessness of Infected She-Ra was interesting to watch, and I'm glad that the disc was shown again, especially after that small cliffhanger in "System Failure." However, I felt that fitting in Seahawk was kind of awkward for the plot, because the characters could have easily just had Mermista and Frosta get them up there. But, I did like how the episode played out with Sea Hawk in it, and it was funny how he and Scorpia bonded. I hope that we see more of that in the following seasons. Entrapta was also funny, in that she had the First One's tech the entire time and just decided not to tell Catra. The winter outfits were awesome! Glimmer and Bow were adorable, while Catra was just... wow. Just wow. The bug-thingies were cool, too, even when they weren't infected. What I really enjoyed about this episode was Scorpia's decision to risk Catra's favor if it meant saving her life. That was really super sweet.
S2E6 - Light Spinner: Wow! This episode was really, really great. It was kind of uncalled for, and didn't really fit into the story, but it was really great to get a whole episode dedicated to backstory, especially a character like Shadow Weaver. It was also super great to see her bond with Micah. Did I mention that I love Micah? He's really, really great! I hope we get more of him, maybe how he met Angella? I think that the story of how Light Spinner became Shadow Weaver was interesting. I never really thought that she became Shadow Weaver while trying to do good. That's really interesting in my opinion. Also, this is kind of off topic, but I just realized that since Micah was a sorcerer, Glimmer's teleportation powers must have come from Angella. I guess she just never uses those abilities.
S2E7 - Reunion: This was also a very very good episode. Once again, it was nice to get backstory. Bow's dads, George and Lance, are awesome! This episode was also very funny because of the lengths that Adora had to go to preserve Bow's secret, and how badly she failed. Bow is a really great character, and it was great to see an episode so clearly dedicated to his development. I really enjoyed Glimmer's horror when she saw that Bow wasn't wearing a crop top. I know that I'm flip-flopping back and forth between topics, but it was also really interesting to see a character not on the Horde's side who openly disliked the rebellion. I don't think that many of us ever thought of the rebellion as anything but good, and seeing George's perspective on this kind of shows us the light. I personally had always thought of them as good and, although flawed, generally the defenders and protectors.
Here are a few more thoughts:
- Spinnerella and Netossa weren't included as much as I would've liked. I know that they aren't the main princesses, but they are still princesses, and vital in the success of the Battle of Bright Moon. Right now, they are quite flat, and it would make them better characters if they were included a bit more.
- Castaspella's inclusion in "The Frozen Forest" was unnecessary and a bit hasty. I get that they wanted to include her, but she wasn't really a part of the Alliance, and, and Angella pointed out, the sorcerers weren't there in the Battle of Bright Moon. But, I do like her, so I'll deal. Also, O felt similar for Seahawk, but I already talked about that.
- Frosta gave a tiny little bit of her backstory away, and then completely stopped. When she explained that she had been a ruler since she was 8 (yikes!), it would have been a perfect moment for Glimmer to cautiously inquire further as to why this happened so that we, the viewers, could know. It made me think, and now I'm more curious then ever. Frosta assumed the throne nearly 4 years before the events of the series. So, we can't really guess that her parents are sick, or on vacation or whatever. Dying is the only explanation, although maybe I'm just not being creative enough. In the first season, Glimmer explained to Adora that the rebellion broke apart when she was a kid, so we can assume that she meant 5-10 years previous. This means that Frosta's parents were not killed in the war with the Horde. So... what happened?
These are my opinions, but I'd love to hear yours down in the comments!
