"Hi Lance." I say as I walk to the mute boy. He waves at me then grabs a piece of paper. He writes something down before showing me.
*We can talk through this! You talk, I write!*
I chuckle at his enthusiasm and nod. "Sure Lance."
The two of us "talk" for a while until Hunk suddenly shoots up.
"LANCE! WE FORGOT!" Hunk says frantically. Lance looks confused for a minute until whatever it was processed then he too began freaking out. He signs something to Hunk as they run out of the room.
"What was that about?" I ask the group.
"They both volunteered to help teach the baking class during lunch and after school." Pidge explains. I nod my head and continue eating.
"Hey Keith?" I look up at the voice. "If you don't mind me asking, and I don't mean to be rude or nosy, but, what are your first words?" Shay asks.
I look over at Shiro with a frantic look in my eye, begging him to help. "Keith here doesn't have any words imprinted on his skin. He thinks he doesn't have a soulmate, but I don't believe that." Shiro says for me.
"Well then how do you explain the lack of words?" I ask.
"I don't know! Maybe they can't speak? Think rationally!" Shiro exclaims before putting his hands up to his mouth, muttering a "shit", under his breath.
"Yeah, well, not everyone is that lucky, Shiro." I say, pain in my chest. I begin walking away, drowning out their voices.
"Keith?" A voice comes from behind me. "Are you okay?" I turn around to see the girl named Shay.
"What do you want?" I say, venom dripping from my voice. She looked taken aback by the way I spoke, however, she composed herself quickly.
"I'm sorry for prying into your business, it was not right in any way. I wouldn't be surprised if you were mad at me." She says, guilt finding it's way into her voice. "But, I do believe that you have a soulmate. As Shiro said, they may have lost their voice or something." I sigh, looking at her before speaking.
"Shay, I'm not mad at you, I'm just a little sad, knowing I don't have a soulmate. And before you say anything, I know I don't have one because I don't deserve one. Who would want to put up with me, the outcast emo who nobody cares about? I know I wouldn't." I say, sadness lacing my words. Shay walks up to me, wrapping her arms around me.
"Keith, here's little advice for you, don't put yourself down, there are people out there who would kill for you. You are one of us now and all of us are here for you. You have a soulmate, I know it, you just have to look a little, maybe he, she or they, were right in front of you the whole time." Shay said before pulling away. "Now, let's head back to the group, okay?"
"Yeah... Shay?" She looks towards me. "Thanks." She smiles at me before saying, "No need to thank me Keith, just saying what I know you needed to hear."
Once we were back to the group, we grabbed our stuff and heading to our next class.
"What do you have Keith?" Pidge asks.
"Biology." I reply.
"Hey! We are in the same class!" They exclaim. I look at them odd. "I moved up two grades. I could move up more but I wanted to be with my pals." They explain. I just nod my head.
Time squip to after school
"Come on Keith!" Shiro exclaims, getting into his car. I walk over to where he was parked and hop in. "Look, Keith?" I hear Shiro say. I turn towards him before he continues talking. "I'm sorry about earlier, I should've been less of a jerk."
"Less?" I say say.
"Hey, I stand by my point, you have a soulmate and I know it." Shiro says, defensively.
"Okay, fine, maybe I do, but who in their right mind would want me?" I say.
"Maybe someone a little crazy, and someone who is a little weird is perfect in the eyes of their significant other. Your soulmate will love every part of you, and you will love every part of them. And who knows? Maybe your soulmate is a little crazy too, who just needs some support so they don't crumble from the weight of what was put on them. Not saying their true pain in fear of judgement, even though, none of us would do that, they have gone through so much and we know that." Shiro says, beginning to mumble. "Ah, I got off track, don't mind me. This will be harder than I thought." He said, whispering the last bit.
We drive the rest of the way home in silence. My mind kept drifting back to our conversation from before.
I wonder who he was referring to?
