He lied. His life was always complicated but this was so much worse. Sure, Harry agreed to keeping this secret but that was before he realised that meant that they had to pretend to dislike each other. To add to that, Draco seemed perfectly fine with this. He didn't seem stressed or annoyed that they had to hide their relationship. Which only made it worse.
Harry was going to be practicing with the others later today. It was for their upcoming Quidditch match. It was against Slytherin. Which meant he'd get to see Draco. He felt like they hadn't seen each other in forever. Every time he tried to meet up with him, Draco said he was busy or that it wasn't a good idea.
God, was this what relationships were always like or was this just Draco? Harry has no idea. He was in class, trying to pay attention. His eyes kept fluttering to Draco. Draco and his stupid blonde hair. It was so stupid and soft and stupid.
He nonchalantly tossed a tiny ball of paper at Draco. No one seemed to notice or care. Not even Draco.
Fuck, he didn't like being ignored.
Harry frowned. The second they were allowed to leave, he grabbed Draco's sleeve, dragging him out of the classroom. He hoped that, in the crowd of students, it would be hard to tell he was holding onto Draco. Though he doubted he'd get that lucky.
"Let go of me..!" Draco hissed.
"We need to talk." He said simply. He led Draco out to the owlery. He had a feeling most people didn't go up there unless they had to and he was definitely correct.
Once there, Draco rugged himself free. "Are you bloody crazy?!"
"Are you ashamed of me?" Harry asked simply.
He knew that neither of them were out. He knew the real reason that they couldn't hold hands or kiss or even just sit together and talk. But he still felt a pang of insecurity. Was it that Draco didn't want to be seen with him? What did he do to become an embarrassment to Draco?
"What?," Draco glared at him. "What the hell is this even about?"
"You not talking to me. Or wanting to see me."
"Not Everything is about you.," Draco said, huffing. "I've been practicing. Y'know, Quidditch? That team I'm on? The one that's going to beat you at tomorrow's match?"
Harry let out a chuckle. "You wish."
"Harry, don't you have practice today?"
"Yes But-"
"Then why're you talking to me?" Draco asked.
"I don't want to be so secretive."
"What?"
"There's nothing wrong with us, is there?"
"Harry-"
"Then why are we hiding? Because of your father?," Harry asked. "Or is it because you're ashamed of us? Of me?"
"Harry, for Christ sake. We've been together for less than a month. I'm not going to come out as gay just because you want our relationship to be public. I don't think you can even call this a relationship yet." Draco snapped.
Harry had to take a step back. Is that really how Draco felt? He felt his anger bubbling under the surface. He knew Draco but he didn't think he'd be such a dick. He hadn't been, in awhile. He wasn't going to let Draco know. He pushed passed Draco. "Alright. I'll just see you at tomorrow's match then."
"Harry, I'm sorry if that-"
"Bye." Harry disappeared down into the crowds of students once more. But, this time, he was alone.
Maybe he could use his anger during the game. He was sure that it would help him win. Though he didn't care much about it anymore. Not in that moment anyways.
Practice was... easy. Surprisingly easy. Too easy. He did as he was told. He played the way he was expected to. They were definitely going to win.
"Harry, are you alright?" Ron asked him.
"Yeah. Tired." He said simply, nudging Ron with his elbow. "You ready for dinner?"
"I could eat a horse." Ron said with a smile.
Harry returned the smile. "Me too."
As long as he didn't think about what happened, he was fine. He could laugh with his friends, eat a delicious meal, do his work. He just had to not worry about it.
It wasn't until he had to sleep that it became an issue. He tossed and turned, trying to sleep but Draco's words were echoing in his head.
"We've been together for less than a month."
Had he messed up that badly?
"I'm not going to come out as gay just because you want our relationship to be public."
Harry covered his ears with his pillow, hoping that would somehow work. It didn't.
"I don't think you can even call this a relationship yet."
He sighed. He just didn't get it. Draco had been so cool to be around for weeks. But suddenly he started acting all weird. What had changed?
He was left with no answers. All he knew was that he wasn't going to be very good at Quidditch tomorrow if he couldn't get any sleep..
