They managed to make a chocolate cake with pink icing after group. They had talked about feeling guilty over things you have no control over. This topic chewed at Stiles stomach lining. He made it through though and at this point that’s all that mattered to him. He had enough guilt to last a lifetime. If he should hold onto that baggage was still in question, but now was not the time, he was too busy. They had found old decorations in the supply closets of the art room and just things left over in the main house from previous events. Scott, Isaac and even Derek helped decorate the room in streamers and covered the floor of the room with balloons left over from a project they did in science a few days before. Boyd managed to get a radio in the room and turned it to an upbeat station that played songs from the 80’s and 90’s. They set up a small table with the cake, cups, punch, and a bowl of mixed chips and pretzels.
When everything was ready Alison went to the girls room to help Lydia get ready for her party.
“I think it’s great that you guys are doing this for Lydia. It shows how far you all have come as a team.” Boyd said as he finished wrapping up a small gift. The guys put on their best button up shirts and put on dress pants.
“It was Stiles idea.” Scott offered as he finished buttoning his shirt.
“He’s the man with the plan!” Isaac added as he shoveled a handful of chips in his mouth. Stiles blushed at the praise and noticed Derek with his moody glare looking every place but at Stiles. Was Derek really mad at him? Stiles hated the thought of Derek being angry with him. He really liked Derek and just like everything else in his life he was screwing it up.
“Alright! The birthday girl is ready!” Alison announced as she walked back into the boys room. She looked prettier than usual. Her usual messy updo was now laid out over her shoulders in dark waves. Her lips were painted a red that popped against her light skin. Scott smiled and walked to his girlfriend almost giving himself away but he quickly stopped and complimented her dress.
“Thank you.” She smiled and moved aside making way for Lydias grand entrance. The beautiful redhead walked out and as usual was a vision of beauty. Her hair was curled and also laid over her shoulders. her dress was a creme color that looked great against her skin. Boyd started singing happy birthday and the rest of the group joined in.
After they sang more students made appearances and they cut the cake and began to eat and drink. The music was turned up and many of the kids had a fun time dancing or laughing over the music. Stiles sat on his bed drinking some punch and watched as his friends smiled, it made him smile. Lydia approached him and put her hand out.
“Can I have this dance?” Stiles put down his cup and took her hand in his. It was a slow song and Boyd was okay with allowing the students to have a slow dance. Lydia stepped in close to Stiles putting her hands on his shoulders. Stiles hesitantly put his hands on her hips and they began to sway in slow circles.
“Thank you for this. It really means a lot. I never thought any one would do something so nice for me.” She smiled up at him.
“You’re welcome Lydia.” He smiled back down and they kept dancing. After another minute Stiles looked up seeing Derek leaning against the wall. He still had his usual sour face on and Stiles now itched for the song to be over so he could talk to him.
“What’s the matter?” Stiles was broken from his thoughts.
“Oh, nothing.”
“Derek?” Stiles could feel himself flush pink at the question.
“What?”
“I know you don’t like me Stiles. I’m okay with that. You’re a great guy and I know you’ll find that person. The one that’s going to help heal you. I’m just glad to be your friend.” Stiles felt so relieved to hear her say that. She stood on her tip toes and kissed him on the cheek and walked away. A few seconds later the song was over and Stiles scanned the room for Derek. He was nowhere to be seen. He spotted Scott just finishing his dance with Alison and the two were walking over to Isaac.
“Have you guys seen Derek?”
“Yeah, he went outside. I think all the human interaction is getting to him.”
He thanked Isaac and ran out of the front door letting the door slam behind him. Stiles knew where to go it was the same place he would always find him. Derek was sitting by himself in the grass looking off at nothing. Stiles approached him and took a seat on the grass sitting close but not close enough to be touching.
“Are you mad at me?”
“No.” Derek said flatly as he picked up small pieces of twigs that had fallen from the tree and tossed them forward. Stiles didn’t believe him but wasn’t sure what to say next. “It’s just.” Derek turned his body facing Stiles, putting them even closer. “Maybe I’m crazy but I feel like there’s something. Something here, between you and me. You confuse me Stilinski. I haven’t felt this way about someone in a long time. There’s something different about you.”
Stiles felt relieved in a way. He wasn’t going crazy, Derek really did like him. Then part of him felt that urgency to run away.
“You’re not crazy. I- I like you; a lot. It’s just I’ve never been good at this. I’m damaged goods.”
“You’re not damaged.”
“It sure feels like it. I can’t even kiss you because- I can’t even explain it.”
“You wanted to kiss me?” Derek smirked and Stiles blushed.
“Maybe.” Stiles said looking at the ground. Derek smiled for another moment and started talking again to drown out the silence.
“When I was 15 I fell in love. Her name was Paige. She died.”
“I’m sorry. I don’t know what to say…”
“I’m telling you because I want you to understand something.”
Stiles continued listening.
“I never thought I could move on from that. After she passed away I didn’t think I could open up my heart like that again. I closed everyone off and look where I’m at now. I should have made different choices but I didn’t. Coming here has really broken down my walls.”
“It has?” Stiles raised his eyebrow and grinned. Derek smiled back and bumped his arm against Stiles.
“I didn’t say they were completely gone. The point is you can trust again and in time you can love again to. I don’t know what it is about you but you have this strange power over me and I finally want to let someone in again.”
Derek leaned in and kissed Stiles on the cheek. Stiles smiled at Derek who got up and walked away. Stiles sat by himself a while longer still smiling.
