I woke up a familiar voice saying

"I'm really sorry"

"sorry about what?" I ask sleepily.

"Hey you're awake, you should still be resting"

"I'm fine Drew" looking at Nick, "What are you sorry about?"

Nick looked at Drew, contemplating if he should tell me or not.

"It's fine" he said to Nick, and to me "the doctor said he's going to have to put him on a waiting list"

"List for what? I ask

"Heart transplant"

I looked at Nick, "Is this true, there's nothing you can do?"

"Yes, his heart can't be saved" turning to Drew, he said "and I've been meaning to ask, has this happened to him before?"

"Not that I'm aware of, I'll have to ask my mum. I was away"

"When will she be here?"

And like magic, there was a knock on the door, Tasha came in with Carol, like she was summoned.

"Sorry for interrupting, but you said to bring her here immediately she arrives"

"Oh my God Andy, what happened?" she noticed the doctor in the room "What is going to happen to my husband?"

"Mrs Killian, I'll let your son explain"

She looked around and noticed me, her eyes widened "Ashley, what are you doing here?"

"Hey, Carol, it's been a while"

She came to me and gave me a hug. "It's been ages, how are you?"

"I'm fine but this isn't the time"
I told her looking pointedly at Nick.

"Oh, right"

I looked at Nick and saw him looking at me trying to figure out what's going on, "I'll go put him on the list with your permission" he asked.

"Yes, please do" Drew answered.

"Excuse me" he said and left.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know he was still here" Tasha said,

I waved her off "it's okay, someone is bound to find out anyway"

..........

Two months later

I was sitting in my a booth in my favorite coffee shop, thinking. Nothing has changed, he's still out of it, no heart, I was getting worried, Carol had turned the hospital to her second home(abandoning her real home), I had to force her to go home, get something to eat and to change her clothes after assuring her that I'll call her if there's any change.

I was taking a well deserved break when I felt, rather than see, someone sliding into the sit opposite me.

"Hey" he said

"Hey, what are you doing here?" I asked

"Saw you leave the hospital, and I thought I'll keep you company. How are you?"

"I'm okay. It's all good, right?"

"Yep, hopefully, something will come up next week"

"You're awfully optimistic" I replied sarcastically.

"Thanks" he said smiling like I paid him a compliment.

At that moment a waitress came by

"Can I get you anything?" she asked batting her eyes
