((It's worth noting that this is an alternate universe where Clint is divorced after the events of Civil War-- the basic prelude storyline for this Oneshot originated in an RP between me and Rawrens_John ))

Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton were tangled up together, watching the stars from a blanket laid out in Clint's yard. Her head was on his chest, his arms around her, their legs brushing each other.

They had been together officially for around six months now. Tony and Stephen had been together a little longer than that and had two adoptive kids; Peter Parker and Morgan, the little girl that Steve had discovered while he was on patrol with Peter and Lavender.

Steve and Bucky had adopted Lavender, and there had been talk-- whispers, really-- of them trying to find a surrogate mother.

Clint and Natasha had never even brought up the subject of having kids. It had been weighing on Clint's mind, but he hadn't been sure how to ask the redheaded woman. She had bonded well with Morgan when Steve had first brought home the little girl. Nat was kind, and had a motherly side. Clint thought she would be a wonderful mother.

"Hey babe?" Clint finally finds his voice.

"Hm?" Nat hums in response. She glances up at him when he hesitates. "Clint?"

"Have you ever thought about having kids?" Clint blurts, but then winces. He feels Natasha go rigid in his arms, and a little bolt of panic goes through him. "I mean!" He says quickly. "Just! Out of curiosity! I'm not saying I want-- well, I would want to, but--" he stutters.

"Clint," Nat interrupts gently. "I'd love to, but I can't."

"Why?" Clint's voice becomes a concerned murmur. Natasha is silent for a long moment.

"This life," she finally says. "It's too dangerous to have kids." Her voice is tight, and she refuses to look at Clint after the two sit up.

"I did," Clint reminds her gently, unsure of the tone in her voice.

"Yeah, and look what happened!" Nat snaps, and Clint flinches in surprise. She looks at him guiltily when she catches sight of the wounded look on his face. "I-- I'm sorry, I didn't-- I don't know why I said that..."

"I forgive ya," Clint smiles sadly. "On one condition."

"Yeah?" Nat raises an eyebrow.

"You tell me what's wrong, truthfully." Nat is silent for a long moment after Clint's words.

"It's..." Natasha glances at the blanket. "Because of the Red Room." Clint's eyes widen and he shifts closer to her silently. He knew the basic details, the backstory, it had slipped out when she was drunk, or her Russian babble during nightmares, and quiet admissions when Clint finally managed to coax them out of her. "The... The graduation ceremony was effective... The point was to make everything easier, even... E-Even killing..." Clint really didn't like where her explanation was leading, especially since he could see the reflection of tears in Natasha's eyes.

Natasha Romanoff did not cry easily.

"What did they do to you, Natasha...?" Clint's voice wavers with emotion.

"The graduation ceremony... Sterilized me. I... I can't, physically can't have kids, Clint... I-I'm... I'm sorry..." Natasha whispers. Clint felt his heart break as she started letting tears fall. He hugs her to his chest.

"It's okay," Clint murmurs, rubbing her back. "You don't have to apologize, Nat... It's not your fault..." He says.

"But... I want to have kids with you, Clint. I truly do." She chokes out. Clint's heart breaks even more. It wasn't easy to get Natasha to open up about anything; she hated feeling vulnerable, more than anything else.

"I-- it's alright, baby..." He peppers kisses across her head.

"I'm sorry I never told you... I-I thought you might..." Nat doesn't finish her sentence, but she doesn't have to.

"Nothing would ever make me stop loving you, Tasha. Nothing. I love you, so much, Nat. Even if you can't have children, or if you have PTSD and nightmares and trust issues. Not a damn thing would make me leave you or stop loving you, Nat." Clint brushes hair out of her face, his eyes meeting here. He smiles, sadness creeping into his expression when he sees hers. "With all you've been through, I don't know how you've stayed this strong. You're beautiful, powerful, sweet, caring, brave... You're the strongest, most badass chick I've ever seen." He lifts her chin up after she looks down. "You're my everything, Natasha. My whole world. I wouldn't change a single thing about you, or trade you for anything or anyone. Because I love you." Clint smiles reassuringly at the redhead in his arms.

"I love you too, Clint. And thank you, so much."

"Of course, Tasha." He smiles wider when she does, and leans closer to her. "One kiss?" He whispers.

"One kiss." She answers, pulling him closer and connecting their lips.
