Chapter 13 | the malfoy family

The two first weeks of summer had been exceptionally and extraordinary awful. Since Caitlyn wasn't allowed to do magic in the holidays, she couldn't practice charms, her favourite thing ever. Mrs Cole, who wasn't aware of magic, wasn't even a bit nicer to Caitlyn. Or anyone for the matter. But surprisingly, she was letting her spend a few weeks with the Malfoy family over the holidays. That cheered up Caitlyn a lot.

Right on the second week, she packed some clothing and some books and waited in Wool's Orphanage's hall for Mrs Malfoy and Draco to arrive. They were apparating, which meant Caitlyn would be again in the presence of magic -- it was truly wonderful. Like the Malfoy family was a pure-blood family, she was expecting magic everywhere, which she was also looking forward to.

Mrs Malfoy and Draco apparated to the street -- the muggles didn't even notice it. They entered the rusty gates of the orphanage and then the building, and walked in the hall.

Mrs Malfoy had long straight blonde and black hair with amazing blue eyes and a very friendly smile. Her lips were very thin. She was very pale, just like her son. Draco had short blonde hair and grey eyes, not to mention the usual smirk on his face.

"Hello, Draco, Mrs Malfoy," Caitlyn greeted happily.

Caitlyn had changed just a tiny bit. She was not as skinny as the year before, but she wasn't in the best shape either. People still thought she was very thin. Of course she had her reasons, some that she didn't like sharing with other people since it was about her past. Actually she had a lot of secrets. She wore an old beige blouse and ripped up denim jeans.

"Hello, dear," Mrs Malfoy said sweetly. She looked at a little luggage bag at Caitlyn's feet. "Is that all you're taking?"

And Caitlyn nodded away. Draco smiled politely at her and the picked up the bag. It was very light.

"Ah, Draco, you're such a gentleman for carrying that," Mrs Malfoy complemented her son proudly. Discreetly, Caitlyn grinned at him, but Mrs Malfoy turned to her. "Don't you have to warn anyone you're leaving now?"

"Hum ... bye, Mrs Cole!" she yelled after an old woman that was at a desk reading a book there in the hall. The woman rolled her eyes at her and quickly turned her gaze back at the book. "That's the orphanage matron."

Mrs Malfoy mouthed and 'oh' and then she gave Caitlyn a hand. She also gave Draco one and they simply, without Mrs Cole even noticing it, disapparated.

They appeared from nowhere in an opened space, and walked along a path. On the left there were wild growing bambles and on the right a high hedge curving alongside. They walked and walked until they got to some wrought-iron gates. Once Mrs Malfoy opened them, Caitlyn saw a handsome manor house as it grew out of the darkness at the end of the straight drive, lights glinting in the diamond-panned downstairs windows. Somewhere in the dark garden beyond the hedge, a fountain was playing.

Once they entered, they automatically through the hallway. It was large dimly lit and sumptuously decorated with a magnificent carpet covering most of the stone floor. There were pale-faced portraits on the walls, their eyes following Caitlyn's every move. While walking, Draco talked about how the land where the manor was built was given to Armand Malfoy by King William I a long time before. Caitlyn was dazzled by the house -- she had never seen anything like it. If you didn't count Hogwarts, of course, and IMUC was nice from the outside too, not that she liked remembering what it was like there ...
