I listened to Enya's request and followed her as she started walking in a direction only she knew about. I was already stacking questions into my head, the questions that I had to keep just for myself since my arrival. The Sivellius College of the Arts had to wait for a while.
As I was admiring the surroundings of this almost victorian looking city I concluded that there couldn't of been a way someone could get lost, at least not in the centre. The big and important buildings like colleges, libraries, some theaters, banks, different sorts of shops and some big buildings that looked unfamiliar to me were all surrounded by houses and blocks full of apartments and after those were located all the wild forests and beautiful flora in general... then the wild ocean.
"What do you think about this island so far?" Enya turned her head at me and smiled warmly. " Could you see yourself living here for a good amount of years?
Her questions made me wonder if I would really move in here for a bigger amount of time than just for graduating my college. What if I would never be able to make friends properly? My family wasn't here with me, I couldn't live all alone or out of pity from a hand of people.
"It is really beautiful but I'm not sure at all to be honest, I guess it will mainly depend on whether I belong here or not. So far I don't feel so welcomed..." I had no reason to lie to her, she had been polite enough to open up about this place so I might as well tell her my real opinion.
She stopped in front of a small coffee house named Excetra. From the outside it looked like your average drinking hideout building but for the inside I could see a quite gothic looking room full of people on its measure, even the lighting was dim, I assume for ambiance reasons.
After several thoughts I had to ask her. "Is this really a suitable place for weird stories concerning this island?" She smiled and leaded me to a free table in the very corner.
"This might be the safest spot I know about, well maybe your own house as well but if you're not careful enough even the walls can have eyes and the floors can have ears in this island." We sat face to face on the luxurious leather sofas as we were waiting for the waitress to mind our advent.
"You know better than me, I would not mind coming here everyday, this place looks amazing. " I chuckled a bit, I looked around, I could see the rest of the room properly... what a masterpiece. Black leather and pale persimmon lighting bulbs, weird yet fascinating statuettes of gargoyles, cobras and hydras, tribal paintings, lace curtains and table skull lamps. I wished to meet the designer of that place on the instant.
Enya looked around as well while tapping her black fingernails over the skull lamp lightly.
"As I promised, I will tell you the real deal about this island or at least what concerns you right now, things that you should keep in mind and what not. Keep in mind that I can not help you in any other way than informing you and I guess supporting you."
I nodded and let her prepare her speech. I didn't mind the amount of time that she needed because I was terribly distracted, several glares were directed at me from different tables. Even if they weren't the earlier stares full of coldness and disgust I still couldn't stop feeling uneasy and a bit shy. There was especially this guy who had been staring at me the whole time to the point of making me quite nervous so I had to aim my eyes back at Enya.
" Well .... I will have to firstly give you some small historical background of the island. I will not go back in time from when it had been firstly populated since it is uncertain to this very day, but the very first person to observe the Island's full of magic atmosphere was Markus Dewar who had also shown the place's attraction power over human beings influenced by magic in any way, from experienced witches to normal people who had an abnormal potential they weren't even aware of. They would all arrive here in a way or another."
"Magic? Do you mean it for real?" I couldn't easily believe what she was telling me. I didn't consider myself close minded but I was inexperienced when it came to meeting the magic face to face. She nodded to my doubt.
"Yes, we are surrounded by magic in here, but this magic differs from person to person. There is the luminous magic and there is the one which is considered dark because of someone's way of reaching it."
"Is this somehow related to the blessed and the sinners?"
"Well I see that you are already starting to figure things out... Well. Those are the names which we used in order to classify ourselves by power nature. We tend to call different powers breeds, and they depend on every other's different way of using it. The ones which were blessed with a good natured power and abilities such as communication with animals, spirits at peace, the power of healing and the list goes on... and the ones that were blessed with a stronger but risky power.."
I glared at her fully waiting for her to explain. I could not believe what things were actually occurring there, was this girl all lying?..Did she even have a reason to? Either way I was going to feel the truth on my own skin sooner or later.
"The sinners were the ones that were not so blessed enough, therefore their only way to full fill their potential was to spill the blood of those who were fated to die in order for their souls to get closer to Death and gain its secrets. Nobody was able to get over their pride for them, they would of preferred someone to die from a natural accident rather than killed by one of them. All they ever wanted was equality, but it feels like the blessed and the sinners will always be at war. Even though they mind their business the number of people that want to annihilate them is growing drastically, and nowadays they are almost close to extinction..."
I looked down at her hand tapping on the lamp slowly and for some reason I felt really bad for the sinners. For someone who didn't know the island's story it was easy to say who was good and who was bad when in reality it was almost the other way around.
"Isn't there any other way for a sinner to gain their powers? Isn't there any way to gain equality between those natures?"
"Unfortunately I'm trying to find answers to those questions myself. I am proud to say that I am a sinner and I will never give up fighting for my brothers of the same nature."
I glared widely at her. "Are you? Can you show me something... like..what is your ability?" I stared at her like a little children would when waiting for his mother to start storytelling a fantasy book.
She smirked lightly and held her hand in front of me, slowly flaming the tips of her fingers. I could not believe my eyes, I wanted to make sure that it wasn't a dream but everything was real and I was for the first time in my life facing real magic.
"Every person has usually two main abilities, but I only own one because of personal reasons I will not detail." She pouted and looked on the side which made me giggle for a while.
" I understand...thank you for explaining me those terms but.. Am I a sinner as well?"
She looked at me and frowned faintly. " I do not know your abilities, it's beyond my power to analyze you or your nature. Perhaps other people felt it better than I but nobody can really be certain unless you are going to full fill your potential and you are going to face the truth yourself. The only thing that I know is that everyone felt your arrival."
After her last words there was a moment of silence. Was I really owning powers of some sort? All I really knew is that there was no way for me to own a dark nature as I had never been repulsed by religion, but perhaps the magic was beyond someone's beliefs here.
I looked back around the room and everyone seemed to had lost their interest in glaring at me except for that guy who was still occasionally laying an eye on me making me nervous again.
The silence was broken by the waitress.
"My apologies for making you wait so long, we had some small issues."
Enya said looking at the waitress. "I will have my usual super hot coffee, what about you Shane?"
''Um... I will be fine with a cup of tea."
As it was all fine and written down I looked away out the window and lost myself into my thoughts.
I didn't have to become anything if I didn't want to.
