EMILIA MERCHANT:
"Jokes Apart, for some it is their first history class. Welcome to my class Miss Emilia Merchant, Toby Hanson, and of course, our uninvited members, Thomas, and his friends, I am Dr. Christopher Jones." Our history teacher introduced himself.
So, he is a Ph.D.
"Please no formalities here, you can call me Chris and I am your substitute history teacher until Mr. Beckley arrives, you can take your seat and feel free" he assured.
Thank god, at least he is not like others.
"Sir, it's just a history class what is so interesting in learning facts and remembering the dates? It is boring as usual" Toby asked.
"Yes, it is just boring" some agreed with Toby.
Even I agree with Toby.
"That's your take on history. My take is tad different; I believe in saying more about whys instead of which and what." Our teacher said.
"I am sure you might have heard about Cleopatra," he asked.
"Who doesn't? She is damn beautiful than any other girl in this class. I wish she was my girlfriend" Tom answered.
"Well, I suppose your over smartness wouldn't have worked, she already had two names in her life, Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony and for your information, she was not just beauty, she was called beauty with brain. That is detailed in Shakespeare's Anthony and Cleopatra. We will get back to that fact later; all we have is she is the last Ptolemaic ruler who ruled from 69 to 12 BC but history is not what you call reading the dates and remembering events. It's living in that time and knowing the story behind the date and time." Chris said.
We were comfortable in calling our teacher Chris as he suggested.
"But the problem with history is remembering dates and who cares what happened in the past?" Genevieve sighed.
"Well Miss Pevensie, may I know the birth date of Taylor Swift," Chris asked.
"December 13, 1989" Everyone in the class shouted.
"How do you remember that date?" Chris asked.
"Well, she is a celebrity" Gene answered.
"The same goes with this history, all these guys we are reading are celebrities of their time, some were famous and some notorious and the dates in our textbooks is the day they became more famous, you get that?" Chris answered.
Yeah! Why not I ever thought about that.
"Its, easy for us to remember birthdays of our loved ones, celebrities and release dates of movies but with history, it is a big no-no, right?" he chuckled.
The class was filled with laughter.
"How about we watch films according to the dates of history?" Chris said.
"You mean we learn stories of history assuming the dates of history as release dates of movies?" the girl who was sitting beside me the whole time, the girl who never even acknowledged my presence for the past 40 minutes, the girl who never smiled nor frowned till now, interrupted Chris.
"Brilliant! Elis. That's what we are going to do. From the next class, I am going to arrange a blackboard in my class and you guys get to decide the release date of our stories. Make sure you write the date on the blackboard and I will tell you the story." Chris smiled.
Sounds interesting!
"That's all for introduction, You guys may leave now," Chris said.
"You should have informed me before Chris, I would have directly attended your next class," Thomas complained.
