I don't know if you guys want a disclaimer but there is a little bit of homophobia in this chapter just so everyone is aware.
I heard a car honk outside my house. I looked down at my outfit and made sure my hair looked okay. I wore a blue sweatshirt and blue jeans with black and white sneakers. I made my way towards the door and saw Reed's car. I took a breath of cold air and got into the car.
"Hey, Teej," Reed said as I sat down in the back. Lester was already in the passenger seat.
"Hey, guys! I feel like I haven't talked to you guys in a while," it was true, I hadn't talked to them in forever. If I'm being totally honest they aren't always the best people and I don't want people to think I'm like them.
As we drove we passed a couple walking down the street. I instantly recognized one of the boys as a senior at our school.
"He's so gay," Reed chirped from the driver's seat.
Lester laughed, "Yea what the hell. If I was gay I would kill myself."
I bit my lip and looked down at my hands. I tried to muster a laugh but I couldn't.
"He's such a girl. What guy likes Ariana Grande and wears makeup," Reed added.
"Not all gay people are like that. I mean look at Ryan, he acts normal," I hated the word normal. Just because someone likes the same sex doesn't make them any less valid than anyone else.
"Yea but he likes boujee crap," Lester pointed out.
"I guess... I don't know," I added. Reed looked at me through the mirror.
"Hey, is Cyrus gay?" He asked.
I looked up quickly, "I dunno know." For some reason I found myself hoping he was.
"Oh, I thought maybe you would know cause your friends with him now."
"Nope. But it doesn't matter," I went back to watching the people walking down the street. This is going to be a long game. I hated listening to people who were so homophobic. It's hard to hear when I'm sitting in the back seat not having a clue about myself. I would never say anything to them though. I know I would lose friends if I told them. Ugh, I'm so awkward. Reed is definitely suspicious of me.
I stepped out the car and the cold air hit my face. I immediately put my hands in my pocket. Today was abnormally cold for this time of year. The line at the gate of the field was long and the sun was starting to set. I walked up to the line with my friends and we saw people we recognized and some that we didn't. A ton of people were already filling the bleachers and I wondered if Cyrus would be there. Not now TJ. I held my student ID up when we got to the tables and handed over $2 to the mom standing there. The field was lit up by the huge stadium lights the stood tall above us. It wasn't particularly dark yet but it would be soon. The cheerleaders were walking out onto the field in little clusters. Some were holding pom-poms and others were holding nothing but a phone. My eyes met Emily's. She smiled and waved at me and I managed to do the same back. She was standing next Iris who's eyes were scanning the crowd. When she saw me she smiled and continued to look around. I wasn't sure who she was looking for but I assumed it was someone she liked. Emily slung her arm around Iris's shoulder and dragged her towards where the rest of the team was standing. I let out a small laugh looking away from the track. Reed was standing next to me and he gave me a small nudge. I was confused at first then I realized that in his eyes I still liked Emily.
"Someone is checking out the cheerleaders," Reed said raising his eyebrows. I laughed and looked behind him at the band was moving around in their spots. I wouldn't have been surprised to find Cyrus standing among them but I knew he wouldn't be. I knew he was friends with a lot of the people I could see from across the bleachers. I knew the game was about to start when I heard the synchronized clicking of cleats on the pavement. I watched as the football players made their way to the opening in the fence. The cheerleaders ran towards the goal post closest the gate. Some of the girls got ready to go into stunts and the others lined up next to each other to cheer on the football players. For some reason, the football players intimidated me even though I play varsity basketball and I'm sure we intimidate other people.
We were winning 49 to 35 in the fourth quarter. The stadium lights were now helpful in the dark night. The air was even colder than it had been before. My face was red from the wind blowing against it. Reed nudged me when he saw Emily do a back handspring. I smiled playing off that I didn't have a crush on her. I shivered which made Reed laugh and playfully punch me. I looked up at the sky. I couldn't see many stars since the lights were so bright but I knew they were up there. By the end of the game, I realized I had spent more time looking around and hoping Cyrus would show up than actually watching the game. Oops. I got back into Reed's car and he drove us to The Spoon. Iris and Emily were going to meet us there after they talked to their coach.
It was pretty empty for a Friday night but I didn't mind. Sometimes I liked quiet more. Reed and Lester sat on one side of the booth and I slid across from them. When Emily and Iris got there Iris sat next to me and Emily on the other side of her. Amber walked by our table and I slashed her a quick smile.
"Who was that?" Lester asked looking behind him.
"My sister," I added like he should have known all along.
"Oh," he said as if he wanted it to be someone else. I knew he did so I let out a small laugh.
We ordered fries for the table and we just talked and laughed for a while. I was thinking about the conversation we had had in the car. I felt bad for Iris who was sitting next to me because she had no idea how they felt and they had no idea about her. It's a good thing none of them have a clue. When the little bell rang I found myself looking to see who stood at the door. My eyes met Cyrus's.
Liking someone sucks! Especially when it's someone you never wanted to like wow. I'm just like heart, what are you doing to me.
