Six days had passed since Friday night. It was now Thursday and I didn't have to go to school. That meant that I hadn't seen Cyrus since that night. He texted me a few times but I didn't have the energy to answer him and I felt bad about it. I knew that he would take my mind off of everything but right now not thinking about Amber made me feel guilty. She has been in a coma ever since the accident. I found it hard to look at her since wires and tubes were connect to her in multiple places. She had a gash on the top of her forehead that had been stitched up and bruises covered her face and arms. She didn't look like my sister. The night she got into the accident she was driving to Andi's house. She was coming back from the store because she was getting snacks for the two of them. They were planning on watching movies together. Amber was driving down a dark road with minimal lights. When she came up to a four-way intersection, she had the right of way. A man was driving towards her on one of the intersecting roads. He crashed into the driver side corner of Amber's car making her hit her head on the frame of the car on impact. They found out later that the man had been drinking.
I hadn't gotten much sleep while being here. I knew that I looked like a mess. Me and my parents had gone home Sunday night to shower and change. We packed some clothes and basic toiletries to bring with us as well. It was sad that this was the reason my parents hadn't been arguing. Sleeping in the waiting room sucked. The chairs were uncomfortable and it was depressing. People looked just as distraught as I did.
I sat down at a small table in the cafeteria of the hospital. I opened my computer and signed into my email where my teachers had sent all the work I was missing. I barely had the energy to do any work but didn't want to be stressed when I got back to school. I pulled up the email I had gotten from my math teacher. A few pdfs of worksheet were attached. I looked through each worksheet realizing I would definitely need help to do this. I looked through the rest of the emails deciding against doing most of it. When I got to history I actually decided to do it. We were working on worksheets about the Holocaust which really interested me. I had been doing homework for 2 hours when I decided to finally answer Cyrus.
Me: Hey Cyrus! I'm so sorry I haven't been texting you. I hope you understand. I was wondering if you wanted to come up to the hospital and help me with my homework. You can come to see Amber too if you want. I miss you by the way.
I thought hard about adding the last part. I knew he missed me too judging by the previous texts he had sent me. I nearly jumped at the buzz of my phone.
Cyrus: Of course! I totally understand. I miss you too! Do you want to go somewhere else so that you get a change in scenery?
I bit my lip not wanting to admit why I wanted to stay at the hospital.
Me: See the thing is I'm kinda afraid to leave. I don't want to be somewhere else when Amber wakes up. I want to be there.
Cyrus: No yea that is totally understandable! I'll see you after school.
Me: Thank you!
Cyrus: Yes of course!
No wonder I liked this perfect human being. Even though I felt bad having Cyrus come up here and help me, I knew that if Amber could talk to me, she would tell me to do something with him and not worry about her.
I sat next to Amber. I held her hand in both of mine even though she couldn't hold it back. I spoke to her as I sat there, "I miss you Amb. I can't wait to be able to talk to you again and actually get an answer. I know that you can't hear me but I don't care. My let me be alone for a little while today... Guess what, Cyrus is coming to help me work on my math homework in a little bit. Maybe he'll come to visit you. I wish you weren't like this. The nurse is at the door now so I have to go. I love you Amb."
I got up and looked back at her as I left the room. She looked so peaceful as she laid there, almost as if she was just sleeping. My phone began to vibrate in my pocket. Cyrus's name was across the screen.
"Hey," I said almost too excitedly.
"Hey, I'm here," he said. I was beyond happy to hear his voice.
"Okay! I'm just leaving Amber's room now so I'll come and meet you in the lobby," I answered walking faster than I had been before. I ran down the stairs making my way to the lobby to meet Cyrus. The lobby was busier than it was in the morning since people were coming after work and school. I looked around to find Cyrus waiting on a small couch by the emergency room. When we made eye contact my stomach burst into butterflies. I took a deep breath and smiled. Cyrus engulfed me in a hug. He arms were wrapped around my neck and my arms were around his waist. He stood on his tippy toes to reach my neck. I rocked back and forth neither one of us letting go.
"So, how are you?" he asked, letting go and standing on his flat feet again.
I shrugged, "You know. As good as I can be.You?"
"I'm good. Art class isn't the same without you there," he said smiling at me. I slung my arm around his shoulder and pulled him closer to me.
"Let's go to the cafeteria and we can get something to eat while we work," I offered.
"Okay," he agreed as I began to lead him.
We sat down at a small table against the wall. We both sat on the same side so we could each see the paper. We were only inches apart from each other. I opened my computer and pulled up the worksheets I was assigned.
I'm sorry this chapter was boring!!
