This chapter is dedicated to Ethereallce because she is one of the sweetest people I have ever spoken to <3

I woke up this morning to a blue ceiling. I got confused since the guest bedroom didn’t have a blue ceiling. I turned around to find a note on the pillow.

‘You fell asleep last night and slept on my bed. I had to head out to pick up my mask for the ball tonight’

-Jacob

P.S. you look really cute when you sleep.

That bastard! I can’t believe it. But why don’t I remember anything from last night? I do remember reaching the party and dancing with Jacob. But after that it’s all a blur. I look at what I’ wearing and have a slight heart attack. Now I definitely do remember being in a dress and not changing. Let’s just pray to god that Jacob wasn’t the one to change me. I quickly hurry to get to school to see if the preparations for the ball have been made.

***

The tables were set, the napkins perfectly aligned to center pieces and the table clothes a starry blue color. The theme of the ball was Black and White. The ballroom had been decorated with white stars hanging from the ceiling, a huge disco ball in the middle of the dance floor, and the tables with alternating cloths and the napkins a shimmery gold color. It all looked beautiful and I was incredibly proud of my work.

Although the theme was black and white, the girls could wear different colored dresses while their masks had to be either black or white. This was all so exciting!

“Okay Sophia, we are all set for Friday now.” Says Jessica. She had been assisting me with the preparations since the beginning and she was one of the best people to work with. “Thank you for everything.” I say giving her a hug.

Everything was finally falling into place. I had a dress, a mask, a date and the everything was set for the ball. It was perfect. I walked out of the ballroom with a smile on my face. I then heard two voices whispering to each other. “It will all fall into place tomorrow.” A familiar voice spoke. “But I’m scared, what if it doesn’t work?” Another familiar voice questions. “Wait, I think someone’s coming, let’s go.” And the two people scurried away.

Um okay. What was that about? So letting my curiosity get the best of me I ran after them. I saw flash of brown hair swiftly run down the stairs and out of the building. Aha! Now it’ll be easier to catch her out in the open. But I was wrong. As I stormed outside to the street, nobody was in sight. Just few trees and cars. But then I see someone sitting on a ledge panting. I slowly creep up to her and yell “Gotcha Ya!”

The person screams and falls off the ledge. At that moment I recognize the running person to be Lana, my own best friend. “You scared me!” Lana screams at me. I sigh in relief and help her up. “I’m sorry I just thought you were someone else.” I say cheekily. “And why were you running away?”

She falters a bit and pauses, almost like she was trying to come up with an excuse. “Nothing, I wasn’t running away from you? Why would I run away from you? I just came back from cross country practice and you know.” Lana rants on without taking a breath. “It’s okay. I believe you.” I say cutting off her ranting. “Well let’s go out to eat now, I haven’t seen you in a while.” I say grabbing her arm. She doesn’t budge. “Come ‘on, I know you’re hungry.” Lana looks at me apologetically and sighs. “I’m sorry Sophia, I can’t. I gotta go back to practice.” I give her a ‘are you serious look?’ I mean she never bailed on me. Even that one time where she got sick, she still dragged her ass to my house for a birthday celebration. Like literally dragged her bum up the stairs.

I nod to let her know that it’s okay. But then I notice a black stain on her arm. “What’s that?” I ask touching the slime substance. “Haha.” She laughs nervously. “Just a mishap in chemistry, nothing more.”  She says while trying to rub the black thing off her arm. She gives me another nervous smile and runs away.

Oh kay. That was majorly weird. And that was saying a lot since Lana was a creep on a daily basis. But getting on the weird scale, was a whole new thing.

“It’s a quarter after one and I’m a little drunk and I need you nowwwwww.” I belt out at 12 a.m. Jacob must’ve gone to another party so I had the house to myself. So I decided to sped my evening by watching chick flicks and popping some pop corn. Me being the lazy ass I am, decided not to turn on the lights so I was currently dancing/ singing/ waiting for the pop-corn in the dark. Alone. At someone else’s house. “I said I wouldn’t call but I lost all control and I need you nowwwwwwww.” I continue not caring about the neighbors who could possibly be wanting to come after me with torches and pitch forks.

“BOO!” yells a really loud voice in my ear causing me to scream and drop the bowl of popcorn on the floor. “Oh Mi God!” I scream. “What the fuck is your problem Jacob.” I yell at the now laughing figure in front of me. “Don’t you know better than to scare a freaking person at midnight?” He turns the lights on still doubling over laughing and turns around to look at me. Jacob then stands there with his mouth hanging open. “What?” I question in annoyance.

“Sophia, you’re bleeding.” He says as I look down at my clothes. When the bastard frightened the day lights out of me, I dropped the bowl of popcorn which then shattered on the floor causing the tiny glass shards to lodge into my skin. Gross.

“Why aren’t you doing anything?” Jacob questions while rushing towards me.

Blood. Stephen. Pain.

Then the last thing I see before I black out is a pair of arms encircling me and lifting me up.

I barely open my eyes to see the clock show 3:14 a.m. I see that I am in Jacob’s bed again and the other side is empty once more. I take a peek around the room and see Jacob pacing back and forth running his hands through his hair while mumbling something. I listen closer without moving.

“I don’t know what to do. You can’t like her, you know what that will cost you. And even if she is your happiness, it shouldn’t matter because it cannot happen. You two are way to different to be together and right now being together isn’t even the case.” I feel my eyes get heavier at the sound of his melodious voice. I have a feeling about who he is talking about but I’m too tired to process anything. But his last words make my heart stop.

“Jacob, you will not fall in love with Sophia, even if you already like her.” He says as if deciding that it was his fate. And at that, I fall back into a dark oblivion.
