Chapter Twenty-Five | Loran

🔷️🔷️🔷️

"Safe!"

The look Emmett shot her was murderous and Alex's grin couldn't be bigger as she taunted the man as he sulked off the field, expression sour. "Aw, Emmett, don't be such a sourpuss." She teased, barely refraining from hiding her smug smile. The man scoffed in disbelief. "That is terrible sportsmanship, Alex! Terrible sportsmanship!" As she tossed the ball to Alice with a grin, she held a mocking hand to her ear. "Huh? What was that? Sore loser noises?"

There was some scattered laughter that only served to widen her grin, Alex unable to remember when she had experienced genuine fun like this and at the cost of nothing. No one to please, no normalcy to fake, just pure unadulterated fun. She felt carefree as she ran from base to base in the massive field. It was their second game and her first out as she batted the ball hard, sending it across the field. The woman took off in nearly a blur, the wind carrying the heavy scent of rain and ozone rushing past her

Edward had taken off after the man, the fastest in the family and the meanest opponent when it came to catching. Alex knew she had only seconds, diving for first base only to be intercepted by Edward, one foot on the base while he held the ball in hand. Without a doubt, she was outted but there was no stopping her momentum and so the woman crashed into the vampire, the two sent tumbling to the ground. She huffed, catching herself with her arms before their heads smashed together.

"That actually hurt." Edward groaned, Alex snorting as she pushed herself up into a sitting position, straddling the man's abdomen. "Careful," she teased, snickering at his wide eyes, "you might actually hurt my feelings." She stood up then, leaning down after a moment to pull the vampire to his feet seeing as he was much too occupied trying to look everywhere but her to get up. Alex took mercy on him, simply patting his shirt back into something mildly put-together before she turned and made her way to the picnic blanket where Ember lay.

Edward watched her go with a dazed expression, completely fixated on the woman until Emmett popped up beside him, snickering at his expense. "Dude, you look like you're about to—" The younger vampire didn't get to finish his sentence as Edward saw the rest of the crude message, turning on his heel to tackle his brother to the ground. Raucous laughter followed as the pair rolled around in the dirt, growls and snarls emitting from the vampires roughhousing in a way that would've severely injured a mortal.

"Foul! Cheats! Ref—where's the ref here? Esme, you saw that, right? That's a foul! Foul!" A soft chuckle escaped her lips as she stood, brushing the dirt off her pants. Alex had all but thrown herself onto the base, knocking into Emmett to purposely disrupt his catch and as a result, prevent him from outting her. She and the man were well aware of her intentions and Alex could only grin slyly as he turned to Esme with big eyes, a hand jutting in her direction accusingly.

"Safe." The woman decided, a mischievous tilt to her lips as Emmett groaned, lamenting his loss. Alex's eyes glinted, challenging as ever as she shot the vampire a lopsided, teasing glance. He glared playfully as Rosalie hid a reluctant laugh and Jasper shook his head in good nature. "It'll be a fair game, she said. We'll have fun, she said. I—" Emmett had turned his back on her and amusingly, Alex was mocking him silently but was startled as he appeared before her, tugging the lid of her hat over her eyes. "Respect your elders."

She snorted a laugh as she fixed it, arching an eyebrow at him. Her mirth remained even as the dark cloud in her mind seemingly vibrated to life, observing quietly. "Oh, so that's what you are." The vampire looked back at her, smug until she continued, "senile." A distinct noise of offence beyond description left Emmett and sent scattered laughter across the clearing.
