As I laid in bed, I heard something fall, I didn't know exactly what it was, so I got up and made my way (in the dark) toward Kailaieah's room. "Nicole"! I heard Joe's voice call. I ran to the room, As I entered, Joe sat awkwardly on top of a man, an intruder "Oh my goodness" I yelled. I ran to Kailaieah (who lay on her changing table) I snatched her up into my arms and left the room hurridly.
"Call the police" Joe yelled. I rushed quickly downstairs, grabbed the house phone and went into the basement, locking the door (With all 6 locks) I sat Kailaieah on the couch and dialed 9-1-1.
"Hello, what is your emergency"?
"Um, there was an intruder in my infant daughter's room, my husband tackled him to the ground and that allowed me to grab my daughter, My husband told me to call the police"
"Was the intruder armed"?
"I don't know"
"Are you and your daughter safe"?
"Yes, We're locked in our basement"
"Okay ma'am stay on the line with me, I'm sending a unit to your location"
"Okay"
So there I sat, I pulled Kailaieah into my arms as I held the phone between my ear and shoulder.
I waited patiently. . . . . . . And then the phone went dead. "Crap" I said to myself. I laid the phone down and cradled Kailaieah close to me. I waited anxiously for some sign that we were safe.
She and I sat for about a good 30 minutes.
Suddenly there was a knock at the basement door. I crept slowly toward the stairs, listening intently.
"Nicole, Baby, It's me . . . Open the door. . ." Joe's muffled breathless voice spoke. I was relieved, I went and picked up Kailaieah and darted up the stairs. I unlocked the door and Joe opened it, pulling Kailaieah and I into his arms.
He walked her and I out front, where we were greeted by bright blue and red lights. A medic came and directed all of us to the (parked) ambulance that sat on the curb in front of our house. A police officer came and wrapped a blanket around Kailaieah and I and diected us toward an empty police car.
We sat in the back of the car. "So ma'am, What happened here"? He asked. "I don't know exactly what happened, all I know is that earlier this morning, Kailaieah was crying and I was gonna get up, but joe did, So I laid there and then"- I was cut off by Joe who came over to us.
"Excuse me, but what are you doing"? He asked angrily. "I'm trying to see exactly what happened here" the officer replied. "Well, you should be asking me, not my wife" He (Joe) said. the officer nodded and began to question Joe.
After they got done talking, Joe leaned down, I could see there was a bandage on his arm and one on his eyebrow. "Are you okay"? I asked concerned.
"Yes" He said, brushing my curious hand away from his face. There was a moment of silence as we looked around. "Joe, I don't feel comfortable staying here" I said, a little bit shaken up. He nodded in agreement. "Okay, We'll go" Joe said.
He gathered everyone up (Kailaieah, Bruno and I ) we got into the car and Joe drove us to Derrick's house. We pulled up to Derrick's house. We all went to their door.
*Knock!Knock!Knock!*
A sleepy Shauna (Derrick's Wife) answered the door in her pajama pants. (I mean it was 4:30 in the morning). "Hey" She said, "Hi" I said walking into the house cradling Kailaieah in my arms.
