I clenched my fists and shut my eyes tight, more tears streaming down my face. Again, I was helpless. In an instant I would be gone. An instant.
And then there was a loud sound. Not the sound that I had expected, my skull smashing against a metal wall. This was a loud clanging sound. Beneath my closed eyes I sensed light. And I obviously hadn't gotten smashed. I opened my eyes. No more darkness. The wall had opened to reveal a blue sky.
Light. Finally.
I stood up. A herd of maybe 50 boys was crowded around the top of this little pit that the cage had stopped at. This creeped me out, but I shrugged it off. They were talking amongst themselves, but I couldn't hear exactly what they were saying. Then there was a voice, louder than the others.
"It's a girl!"
"No, really? I know I'm beautiful, but get over it and find a way to get me out of here!" I yelled back up, although I hadn't actually known I was a girl earlier. My voice trembled slightly, but hopefully they didn't notice.
I heard a defensive mutter and then a rope was lowered. It was made of vines. I looked at it skeptically, but then stepped into the loop at the bottom. I really had no other option. I got to the top and took in my surroundings. Pretty much a big field with a few wooden buildings. And there was a forest next to the field. As long as it wasn't that cage I was in earlier.
"Aw, look, the shank's been crying!" A voice said mockingly.
I searched for the source of the sound. A heavily muscled Asian kid was smirking from somewhere in the middle of their little herd.
"Shut it, asshole," I spat. "How about you try going for a ride with no light whatsoever in a metal cage?"
Again, I cursed my shaking voice.
Was was a shank anyway?
"Been there, done that," he smirked.
I rolled my eyes and turned to tall, pale, blonde-haired boy near me. He was in front of the rest of them, so I figured if I was to talk to any of them, it should be him. I opened my mouth to talk.
"I'm Nick. Before you say anything, you should know that we don't know much more than you. And you aren't going to get any answers until the Tour, so don't bother asking. Until tomorrow, this is all I'm going to tell you: Don't ask questions. Don't hurt anybody else. And most importantly, don't you dare find yourself behind those walls."
Author's Note:
I don't know exactly how often I will update or how long the chapters will be. I want to throw a can of soup at Rat Man's head.
