33. Trees, Trees, and More Trees

It was 4th of July weekend, and dad was hosting our annual cookout. Sal and Larry's parents were there, Ash and her parents, as well as Todd and Neil with their parents. Alex even came with her dad, who I had met once before.

I grabbed a pop from the cooler and skipped over to my friends, sitting in cloth lawn chairs, chatting. I sat down next to Sal, and he laid his hand out for me to hold.

"So, there I was, running down the street in my underwear, screaming." Alex said, taking a sip of her drink. "Long sorry short, don't try LSD from a guy in a Scooby Doo Mystery Machine."

"I don't even wanna know what I missed." I said, as she finished her story. She laughed.

"I took LSD I bought from a guy in a Mystery Machine." She said, filling me in.

"Why- wha- I-." I shook my head. "I don't wanna know why you'd even take something from someone in a van."

"I'm an impressionable child." She shrugged.

"That's like the time I got a really bad batch of weed, not going to say who from." Larry said, looking over at Todd. "But, I don't know what it had in it man, but I felt like I had been hit by a bus. I laid in bed for two weeks and pissed myself three times after I smoked it."

"Dude, I dunno if that was weed then." Alex shrugged, taking a sip of her drink. "I think you got something mixed with a muscle relaxer."

He shrugged, "I did have some sick ass dreams though."

"What are we talking about, my good Christian children?" My dad said, squeezing both of my shoulders, "Definitely no talk about illegal drugs, right?" My dad didn't care, normally, but today was finally the day everyone was meeting his girlfriend, Melissa. He wanted everything to go well.

"Of course not." I said. "We are all wonderful, peaceful, law abiding, young adults."

He chuckled and patted my head. "Good, that's what I thought. Melissa will be here soon, so remember, no talks of under age drinking, or illegal substances. I'm looking at you, Larry."

"You got it." He said, giving my dad a thumbs up. "What's weed anyway?"

"Exactly. While I'm here, who wants hot dogs, who wants a hamburger, and who wants a cheeseburger."

I looked out from inside the kitchen. Over the past two months, dad had a nice deck built out back, with a pergola and some seating. It turned out nice, and with the potted flowers everywhere, and the long picnic table, it looked like something straight from HGTV themselves.

"Whatcha doin?" A voice asked behind me. I jumped, pulling my hand back to wack whoever was behind me, but they caught my wrist. "Shit, babe." Sal said, putting my wrist down, "Don't smack me, please."

"Sorry." I said, laughing anxiously. "You scared me."

"I noticed that." He chuckled. "What are you doing?"

"Just checking stuff out." I said. "Dad looks so excited."

"Yeah, he does." He said, wrapping his arm around my waist, pulling me closer to him. "Do you think you'll like her?"

"I think so." I replied.

Just then, I heard a car door slam, and watched as a woman walked through the gate and over to my dad. She had on a pair of white shorts and a nice blue blouse. Her hair up in a bun, sunglasses placed neatly on top. I smile as they hugged and gave each other a sweet kiss.
