My response to Ned is "I've never done that before." I have done similar things, though

"Wow," he says.

"Thanks," I say, not being able to hide a smile.

I return home in good spirits... until Dad claws me. He gives me a good raking along my flank. Finished with his 'scolding' he walks away.

Mom runs out of our cave right as Dad walks in. "Sweet heart! Where were you? I was worried about you!"

"You were?" I ask, surprised that she would even remember that I exist. After all she thinks I'm worthless

"Yes of course! I'm your mother, aren't I?"

I nod.

"I was... somewhere."

"Okay! I'm glad you're alright!" Most mothers would continue asking where I was until I told them. For all she could tell, I might have been smoking cigarettes while swearing with my friends. Not that I have friends, I think.

In the hall on the way to class I come across Esemais.

"I was wondering if I could come over to your house after school," she says, "I don't know you vary well and my mom said that the best way to get to now someone is to spent time with them."

"Did your mom say you could come over? If she didn't it most likely would not be a good idea then."

"Yeah, she did."

"Then you could come over if you want."

"Don't you need to ask your mom?"

"No. She'd let me bring over a thousand friends without complaint, or me asking."

"You have one good mom."

"Not really."

"Why not?"

"She pretends I don't exist. None of the things I know are from her teaching me. There are lots of things not to love about her."

"You have one terrible mom."

"That I can agree with," I say.
