Chapter 2

I pick an apple from a branch that is above me and bite into it, breaking the delicate skin and tasting the sweetness of it's juices. I chew it, contemplating whether or not I should go see the prince.

It could be a trap to imprison me, but why would he care if some people he didn't even know were dropping dead at my hands? It's not like I plan on killing the entire freaking village! That is, unless someone offers me a good deal to do so.

And anyways, it's the prince. P.R.I.N.C.E. That equals lots of gold, and man do I need some of that.

Yea, I don't buy everything I want. I steal most things. But sometimes it would be nice if I could use my money to buy things so I wouldn't always look suspicious. It would be nice to go shopping for a nice dress if I ever end up needing one while I'm on the job.

Maybe I could even buy a small home in the village, so whenever my victims ask to come home with me, I won't have to keep making up excuses as to why they can't.

My father would be scolding me if he saw me now. "It's simple. You do it or you don't. Don't sit around thinking about it. If you end up in trouble, you know how to get out of it. Just pick," he would say.

I take another bite of my apple and chew slowly, considering what my father would do. That's when I decide to just go for it. What do I have to lose? The prince surely knows how deadly I am if he wants me to exterminate his enemies.

I toss my apple and take a swig from my 'happy drink'. I feel warm and tingly. I feel happy. I find myself smiling for no reason, and jump out of the apple tree.

I grab my bow off of my back and take an arrow from it's sheath. I position the arrow into the bow and search for something to shoot. I spot a little bird, perched in a tree about fifty feet away.

I grin deviously and aim. I take a breath, let it out, and release the arrow. It sails through the air with a whooshing sound. I hear a squawk, a thump, and then dead silence. I approach the bird and smile. I have fantastic aim. I retrieve the arrow and place it back into the sheath.

I look at the sky through the trees and see that it is starting to turn a light yellow. I walk back to the apple tree and grab my bag. I place my knife on my belt and sling my bag across my chest underneath my cloak.

I hide my bow and arrows in the top branches of the apple tree, and climb down. I pull out my pipe, which is about a foot long and made of a deer antler, and sprinkle some tobacco into the bowl at the opposite end of my mouth piece.

I take out my matches and strike one, igniting the small wooden stick. I place it to the tobacco and breathe in, lighting the tobacco to glowing embers.

I toss the used match onto the forest floor and inhale the smoke. I breathe it into my lungs, and I become tingly all over. I have not smoked in a while, so I am feeling the effects of the nicotine. It is a nice feeling.

I walk for a long time, until the sky starts to become an orange color, before I reach the walls of the village. There are guards at the gate, and there is no way they would let me in, so I have to resort to scaling the walls.

I find a tree that is somewhat close to the walls, and begin to climb. The walls are about twenty-five feet tall with wooden spikes pointing inwards and out at the top.

Once I reach the highest the branches will allow me, I step out on one that is fairly close to the wall. It is just about level with the spikes, so it should be easier to jump over the wall.

I see a building directly next to the wall, but it is only maybe fifteen feet tall. It will have to do. I take a deep breath, and jump from the branch, which snaps from the sudden pressure and release.
