Patrick had woken me up before the sun came up to start walking again. I never asked him why were still walking, I guess if we were going to die we would go down swinging, so to speak. our bodies both hurt from either sleeping on the ground or from being attacked by the heads yesterday.

the sun was now high in the sky and we had walked until the sweat poured off of our bodies. Patrick's face was red when he decided to sit down on a rock. I begun to think of a thought that scared me and gave me hope.

"Pete never came back the other night." I said.

"from what I've seen I think he's just a liar" Patrick said making me frown. maybe he was still living happily in the New World with his match, maybe she was going to have his first or....

"you don't think he's somewhere out here with us do you?" I asked Patrick.

"no, he was probably one of the ones laughing at us along side the road." Patrick said coldly.

"Pete wouldn't do that to me." I said sadly. there was a long silence.

"I'm sorry, I just know you wanted him to be your match instead of me. maybe I am a little bit jealous." he said admitting to one of the worst things he could. but for some reason I didn't think less of him, I somehow respected him for admitting it.

"I'm not feeling very good" I said as a wave of sickness hit me.

"are you alright?" he asked but I felt like the blood was draining out of my head and my knees went weak. I saw Patrick jump up before everything went dark.

I woke up to the cold and dark. I was very aware that we were in our tent and Patrick had me close to him, holding me.

"you awake?" he asked.

"yeah" I said with a sticky dry mouth. "what happened?" I asked.

" I'm not sure, I'm thinking it was exhaustion, I don't think we should walk anymore." he said. I knew what that meant, we were giving up. he understood that death was inevitable at this point. I didn't even think I could get up again, I was so tired and the skin on my face burnt. we were just two eighteen year olds that were never taught what to do in the wilderness let alone a desert full of nothing, of course we were going to die soon.

As my eyes adjusted to the dark I looked at his face. I was so silly to find it normal when we first met, it now seemed beautiful to me, even with dirt streaks on his face. He held my hand tightly. I knew maybe another day and I would die and maybe he had another few left in him. he was so selfless and kind I knew what this was.

"I love you." I said.

"I love you too" he said and pressed his lips gently to mine. I smoked at the thought of being in love with my match, it seemed so silly to me.

"I hear something" Patrick whispered so quietly to me I almost didn't hear him. my pounding, aching head almost didn't catch the faint crunching sound. it sounded like walking and I was afraid it might be some strange desert animal. I remember stories the kids at school told about strange dog like howling they said came from beyond the wall from beasts called coyotes that ate people. even once I thought I herd the howling of this beast while trying to sleep in my bed one night.

We both sat up now just listening as Patrick held me tight as the gentle crunching rocks and sand seemed to be coming closer. I closed my eyes tight not wanting to know what was coming for us. Patrick's and my terrified breaths were barely audible. Neither of us knew what kind of monsters existed out here. the more I sat up the dizzier I felt the coldness of my head was beginning to take over bit I was too scared to move or make a sound.

Hey guys, very short chapter sorry, you'll have to wait until the next chapter for them to get eaten and dragged away by vicious dogs. but any way, leave a comment and/or a vote if you enjoyed and I will crank more out for ya!
