Apparently, turning up two hours late to a party was normal? I was completely unaware and rushed to get ready, pestering Reece to come and walk with me at ten pm, it was a little bit before midnight. We rocked up to this party, which looked as if it had already happened, streamers lined their lawn, as did an assemblage of plastic cups and leftover fast food wrappers. I could feel the music inside my body, beating as if it were another heartbeat, causing goosebumps to rise and also my anxiety levels.
We opened the door and swam through the boards of sweaty bodies, dressed up and intoxicated. The song was unfamiliar, but quiet dreamy, I started to like it. I looked over at Reece for comfort, his head bobbing in time with the song, but I was captivated by his lips as he mouthed along to the lyrics. He looked back at me with wide eyes and dilated pupils, unaware of me staring."Let's get booze," he spoke, talking ahold of my shaking hand and rubbing circles on the back of it, pulling me through the thickets of people.
We entered the kitchen, which was littered with yet more plastic cups, filled with an unknown substance, some even had rubbish floating on top, and some had spilt, making some cups sticky. We picked some that looked semi-ok.
Impressively, I took three and tipped my head back, allowing the liquid to filter through my body and waiting for it to kick in in a couple of minutes time. Reece just delicately sipped on one for the time being, I gave him a disappointing glare, teasing him by acting as if I was tipping his cup up, he was not amused.
"You should be celebrating," I smirked, crossing my hands over my waist, he shook his head at my response."You didn't even want to come out, but look at you, sinking three cups of alcohol." he laughed to himself, his eyes scanning some more cups, I could tell he would cave in. "You know what, fuck it," he announced, finishing off what was left in his cup and grabbing a couple more, finishing those in a less than a minute.
"Shall we dance?" he asked, squinting as the alcohol burnt his throat, and wiping away the excess liquid from his lips. He stretched his arm out towards me, but I looked it at, hoping he was joking about dancing, but he wasn't.
"I don't dance," I said, but he wasn't taking that as an excuse.
"You also said you weren't coming out tonight," he spoke with puppy dog eyes, he knew it made me turn to jelly and I couldn't say no, so I took his hand in mine as he pulled me back through the crowds.
The song had changed to an unfamiliar one with guitar riffs and bass kicks, everyone here seemed to know it, including Reece who was rocking along to the music, singing along, his eyes focused on a couple in the corner making out.
I stuck out like a sore thumb, the only one in this packed room who was stood frigid, staring at Reece and the colourful lights behind him.
He took ahold of my shoulder and began screaming along to the lyrics, using his hand as a microphone. I looked at him with such mesmerisation, doing my best to look like I was enjoying myself, and truth is I was, I couldn't not be happy when I was with Reece.
He fell into me slightly and I took ahold of him by the shoulders, his head resting on my shoulder. I could feel his body vibrate as he was laughing. The music mellowed out, it became muffled but was still going on."Right, when it kicks in again, I want you to go absolutely mental, okay?" he said, his hands either side of my face, he was buzzed off of this.
I swayed, anticipating the drop, Reece began counting down on his fingers, when he hit one, I launched myself into the air, throwing my hands up with me and shaking my head viscously in time with the music. Reece was using my shoulder as a pogo stick, as he too was jumping alongside me. His hands snaked around my waist as he pulled me in closer, his hands carefully brushing my hair from my face, his knuckles grazed at my jawline and his head tilted to one side, I looked into his eyes, they were focused on my lips and nothing else. I rubbed my finger across his cheek, it was red and slightly sweaty from all the dancing we had been doing. His lips pressed against mine, and I ran my fingers through his hair. He pulled my closer, deepening the kiss, his tongue sliding against my lower lip.We pulled away as the song ended, fixated on each other, wondering what was going to happen next.
"flux, bloc party," he spoke as if I was suppose to understand that. "that's the song," he spoke, pointing at the speakers. "Let's go somewhere," he shouted over the song that was just beginning to play.
here in your arms - hellogoodbye
I held onto his lose hands and swayed in time with the music, mouthing along to a song that I would blast on my old MP3 player back in the day.
"cause our lips can touch, and our checks can brush, our lips can touch......here" I sung along, the biggest smile on my face, edging closer and pointing my finger at Reece at the last bit. He smiled back at me, moving closer, his lips parting and his head tilting towards mine, our noses brushing.
I instantly pulled away from him, jumping up and down, screaming at the top of my lungs and shaking my head around some more. I looked at Reece who was shaking his head at me and clapping sarcastically.
"Well played," he shouted to me. I clutched on to his hands and pulled his away from this bustling room and up some stairs, I needed quiet.
We snuck around in the darkness, clumsily bumping into each other now that the drink had finally kicked in, and constantly laughing at each-others stupidity.
We found an empty room right by the staircase and just sat on the bed next to each other, comfortable in the darkness that surrounded us. The living room was just below us and I could hear the fogged sounds of my favourite song still being played."Hellogoodbye, here in your arms" I mimicked him, and he bashed his shoulder against mine. I began to sing along again, turning my attention to Reece and swayed as the song approached the slow part.
"Our lips, can touch, ours lips can touch......here," I spoke, instantly crashing my lips onto his. The song beginning to pick up and this kiss getting deeper, as Reece gently pushed me down onto the bed as he straddled over me. I took ahold of the hem of his shirt and began tugging at it. He paused for a second, breaking the kiss, I stared at him, longing his touch, his lips back on mine, to taste him again.
"Did you request this song, just so you could kiss me again?" He asking, raising an eyebrow at me.
"You got me," I shrugged, laughing at his statement.
"It worked," he spoke, as he began to lean in again.
I put my finger to his lips as I began to hear slurred words from the opposite side of the door and a girls high pitched laughed, the door knob turned and the light blinded us, exposing us to these strangers.
Except they weren't strangers.
"Lara?!" Reece practically choked.
"Ree-Shiloh, FUCK." she stood in the doorway, her red satin dress bunched up at her waist, and lipstick smudged all over her mouth. Behind her was Zac, a boy who I once called mine.
"Wait, you two know each other?" I spoke, pushing Reece off of me, focusing mainly on Lara's facial expressions.
"N-no," He stammered, "I mean I know Lara, she's friends with my friends," he started, but Lara looked displeased.
"How do you know each other?" she asked me, but I couldn't bare to look at her, I refused to speak to her.
"We're friends," Reece spoke, and I scoffed at his statement. Friends? I think tonight can confirm that we've moved past that road sign.
"Zac?" I called out, squinting my eyes at him, refusing to believe it was him, but of course it fucking was.
"Yeah, Hi Shiloh. Long time no speak," he awkwardly spoke, poking his hand out and giving me a slight wave, but Lara wasn't having any of that, whacking him and mumbling words under her breath.
She continued to stand in the doorway, not realising that Reece and I were in the middle of something and we were not going to give up this room, especially not for her.
"Let's go," Zac finally said to her, placing his hand on her shoulder and guiding her out of the room. "I'm glad you've found someone Shiloh," he said before closing the door on Reece and I.
