This story is based off of The Little Mermaid in the way that it was my inspiration. For a long time, I have wanted to throw some twists into this story. It's been sitting around in my head for months, and so I'm finally writing it.
Because I'm taking such a classic tale and making it my own, I want to explain a few things first. I am not attempting to make this alike to the original. I have taken it upon myself to change the story in several ways to suit the story I'm trying to tell.
I have not watched this movie in years, therefore I don't remember much of it. I'm sure there are several written versions, as well as the original, but I did not read up on those either. I considered it, but I feel that my own ideas are very strong. Research into the original tales at this point would be more likely to take away from my version than add to it.
The things kept from the Disney version are (very loosely) the main idea and the names. To this I have added and removed characters, and made Prince Eric into an average boy. Ariel is a princess. I replaced Ursula with 'Evil' who takes many forms and is much more an abstract idea than a person. I have added the typical fairytale 'curse' in order to explain why and how my characters end up together.
I hope you enjoy my version of the story and that you will read on after this long author's note. It's probably been tiring to read, but I did want to explain my view on this and avoid any "corrections" about how the original story goes.
