His mother sobs
all over the note,
so much that his
father doesn't
have a chance
to read it.
“My baby boy
has gone away,”
she says, when
her tears allow
for talking.
He holds her
and sheds tears
of his own.
There is no
sorrow bigger
than that of
an abandoned
mother who
did everything
to keep her
son around.
“At least he
is safe,” his
father comforts.
But she does
not know that.
Not until the
letters start
coming in,
the first
saying he
is to be
married.
