“You alright, Eric?”
“Would you believe
me if I said I saw
a mermaid?”
“Oh no,” his mother
whispers, and his
father looks horrified.
“I didn't think this
would ever really
happen.”
His mother holds
him close – like
she hasn't since
he was a kid –
and whispers,
“At least he
is safe. Alive.”
They explain the
curse then, and he
tells them about
the dreams. And
his father says,
“Maybe stay off
the boat for a bit.”
He already planned
that, only an hour
before. But now it
feels impossible – like
he should go back
right away. Right now.
The curse? Her?
He didn't know.
But it all seemed
too final that he
would see this
girl a curse made
him dream and
then one day meet
her and fall in love.
It wasn't love, anyway.
She was pushy and
demanding. He didn't
even want her – or at
least he didn't like
wanting her.
