Sometimes in his dreams
he sees a girl his age
wearing clothing made
from braided sea grass
embroidered with shells
and wildflowers.
He has seen mermaids
in the movies and some
of his favorite picture books.
But they don't look like her.
At twelve, Eric has only just
begun to like girls. He has
seen her for some time,
but not until now has he
seen her as beautiful.
