"Wouldn't it have been a lot easier if you lived on campus rather than paying five hundred dollars a month for your apartment, which is just a ten minute drive away from the college?" Miranda Harries said, folding a pale blue sweater and placing it inside an open suitcase.
Just turned eighteen-year-old Meghan looked over at her mother and rolled her ice-blue eyes. "Mom, we've been over this. I can't stand mess, and if I had to share a room with another girl and she was a pig, I wouldn't be able to cope." She zipped her vanity bag closed and put it on top of her other belongings in her third suitcase and sighed. "There, all packed. Just need to get my laptop and iPad now and I'm all set."
Miranda smiled at her daughter, but her hazel eyes begun to fill up. "Look at you, all grown up and leaving home."
"Mom, I'll be back for two weeks at Christmas, that's only four months away, and I'll phone you nearly every day, don't worry." Meghan grabbed two suitcases and her mom got the other and together they made their way downstairs.
Oliver Harries was standing in front of the mirror in the hallway, adjusting his tie and then he ran a hand back through his short but smart salt and pepper coloured hair. He turned as Meghan and her mom stopped at the foot of the stairs and gave his daughter a big, beaming smile. "So, here we are. It's that time already, my girl leaving for college. I'll sure miss you, honey."
Meghan went up to him and hugged him tight, not wanting to let go. But she knew she had to. She pulled away and looked into her father's eyes, the exact same blue as hers. His hair had been pale white when he was young, the same as Meghan's. It was easy to tell that she was daddy's girl, not mommy's.
"I'll miss you both," Meghan said, with a little smile. "But, I'm so excited! In a few years I'll be a teacher, and I'll make you both so proud!"
Her parents put their arms around eachother and responded with big smiles. "You already make us proud, Meg," Miranda said. "Now, where's your darn brother? Tate! Tate, get down here now, your sister's about to leave."
A few crashes and bumps and five seconds later, Tate, her fifteen year old brother, came bounding down the stairs, his Xbox One headset hanging around his neck. His light brown-blond hair was sticking up all ways, and he was still wearing the same clothes he'd had on since yesterday. "So, you're going then. Have a good one, sis." He turned to Miranda and nodded. "Well, I'm gonna go back up, Todd's-"
"No you are not, you're going wave off your sister and then you're going to your grandmothers to help her weed the garden," Miranda said sternly, giving Tate the usual warning look. "And don't bother arguing back, because I'll take your Xbox off of you."
Tate looked like he was going to make a fuss but didn't, instead he came over to Meghan and gave her a little hug. "Make sure you're safe, Megs, and text me?"
Meghan laughed and squeezed her little brother tightly. "I will, Tatey. Don't worry." She kissed his forehead then ruffled his hair, as annoying big sisters do. "Right, I better get a move on. I have to pick Callie up on my way."
The four of them made their way outside the big, suburban house onto the double driveway and to Meghan's white Audi A1. Her father and Tate put the suitcases into the trunk and Meghan got into the car. "Well, I'll see you all soon! I love you! Bye!" And with a wave, she put the car into drive and made her way to Callie's, which was a ten minute drive away. She had a quick glance in the rearview mirror and saw her family still standing in the drive, still waving.
I'll miss you all, Meghan thought to herself. She felt a little bit sad, but excited about all the new prospects and adventures she would soon have. Yes. This was going to be amazing.
