Old Testament
What about it?
I take it that most Christians major on the New Testament in comparison with the Old testament (it's a probability). The reason might be that we hardly know how to relate the Old Testament in this age.
So what's your view on the Old testament? How do you see it? Of what importance is it for this generation?Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for instruction, for reproof and conviction of sin, for correction of error and discipline in obedience, [and] for training in righteousness (in holy living, in conformity to God's will in thought, purpose, and action),
2 Timothy 3:16For every scripture is God breathed and profitable for instruction. Therefore, the Old Testament offers more than only laying out the history of the people of Israel and the beginning of the world.
There is a good relation between the Old Testament and the New Testament.
You know that for every end there must have been a beginning and to understand the end you must have first understood its beginning.
Now the Old Testament marks the beginning of the world while the New Testament marks the ending of the World.
Take for instance, the death of Jesus Christ the beloved son of God on the cross, to redeem us from our sins once and for all.
The Old Testament shines light on why Jesus had to go down that road in order to save us from the penalty if sin which is death .
-It explains that for every sin committed there is a pay.
And that is how Aaron the High priest was given the task to offer sacrifices to atone for the sins which the Israelites committed.
As it is written in Leviticus 5:13
[13]Thus the priest shall make atonement for him for the sin that he has committed in any of these things, and he shall be forgiven; and the remainder shall be for the priest, as in the cereal offering. Now to atone for sin, sacrifices of bulls, lambs... without blemish was made but none of these paid the price for sins.
That is why Jesus had to step in as the sacrifice for sin to those who accept the sacrifice.
He was tempted but sinned not so that he as the anointed priest may not bring guilt upon the people (according to Leviticus 4:3).
His pure blood shed on the cross paid the ultimate price to clear us from the wages of sins which is death.
Another instance is when the book of Hebrews mentions that Jesus is our High Priest.
Going back to the Old Testament, we get to understand why the book Hebrews refers to him as our High priest.
We also understand his role as a High priest in comparison with Aaron who stood as the High Priest as recorded in the Old Testament.
[14]Inasmuch then as we have a great High Priest Who has [already] ascended and passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession [of faith in Him].
Hebrews 4:14
[1]FOR EVERY high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in things relating to God, to offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.
Hebrews 5:1So Jesus had to come, and dwell among men.
Because He was chosen as our High priest to intercede on our behalf and as Hebrews 5:1 says, A High priest to act on behalf of men is chosen from men. So he had to come dwell with men and come from men.
From the fact that man was incapable to save himself and neither the law as seen in the Old Testament, then that explains why Jesus in the New Testament had to step in.
Take also the story of the Kings and kingdoms. I feel that all this is a picture of what the Kingdom of God is.
When we say that God is the King of Kings, we have a picture in mind of who a King is and the authority that comes with that position.
This is brought out in the book of I and II Kings,Chronicles, Esther and the rest.
I am reading the book of Exodus and I am filled with awe.
God's attribute of order and His holliness has been brought out so clearly and I think it has changed my perspective of the Old Testament.
Well, this was just but a few examples I believe there are so many of them.
I think it'll would be wise if you consider taking some time to study the Old Testament, get to understand what Christianity is all about rather than being swayed by every wind.
I believe there's so much we'll learn from it that will clear the misunderstanding,of course while being guided by the Holy spirit.
It's my prayer that we will go back to the Old Testament, this time with a different view of it and with an aim of understanding it,and also know how it relates with the New Testament, rather than reading it like a story.
May the Lord God glorify His name.
And may God's grace and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you now and forever.
Amen.
God bless you
