"His lungs became swollen and filled with fluid. Fluid in the lungs causes severe shortness of breath and may lead to respiratory failure. This may affect the heart and brain, and it may be life-threatening. Even with treatment, he may have permanent lung damage."
Jordan's POV:
I had a PFT test at nine. They wheeled me into a laboratory on the second floor. The hospital gown was far too drafty, but I couldn't bring myself to complain.
I couldn't bring myself to speak because I was so preoccupied with thinking and Cameron and Chris. Mostly Cameron.
Would she really want to take care of me, or would she leave?
When they had me breathe into a tube that was hooked up to several machines, I felt like a child. I felt so small and insignificate in comparison to how large and complex they were.
They then had me sit inside a small and compact booth and breathe into a tube sticking out of the wall. They told me they were measuring how much air I was breathing.
I didn't pay much attention.
It was eleven by the time I got back to my room in the ICU.
A nurse helped me into my bed and tucked me in.
I promptly fell asleep afterwords.
--------
The pain was stabbing the back of my mind and easing its way to my frontal cortex.
I thrashed as much as I could, figuring that my pain was a hypothetical cacoon and if I could squirm my way out I'd be fine.
My throat was starting to hurt, and I wasn't sure why.
Then I realized that I was screaming. A flood of people came in and started unplugging the majority of the things I was hooked up to, I didn't have time to wonder why.
"Respiratory failure...."
Whoever said that sounded distant.
Lights were on now, but they were suddenly out and the faces and moving lips above mine were suddenly gone.
--------
Cameron shifted next to me.
The air on my face was cold but the security and warmth of the bed substituted for that. I nuzzled my face into the back of Cameron's neck, and she sighed in content.
I matched my breaths with hers, though I couldn't really feel myself breathing. She had fallen back asleep.
Rain hammered against the window and I heard thunder somewhere in the distance.
I went to sleep again, hearing rain and someone saying my name in the back of my mind repeatedly.
Frantically.
