A Sweet Memory

*15 years later*

I drove down a long and way to fimilar road. The windows were rolled down and The Killers played in the background. 

"are we almost there" I heard a soft voice from the back seat say

"We'll be there in a few minutes pumpkin," I said with a smile looking in the back seat, my eyes meeting her big sweet brown ones. Her eyes are filled with so much joy, they know nothing of pain or sadness.

I felt a hand rest on my leg causing me to look over. My beautiful wife gave me a small but sweet smile knowing where we are going. I Returned the smile before focusing back on the dirt road. 

We continued to drive for about 5 minutes before reaching our destination. 

I opened the car door while my wife went to the back seat to unbuckle our little girl.

I stood there for a second, my eyes not leaving the view in front of me.

I felt a hand rest on my shoulder, "Hey, babe?" her soft voice spoke

"Zendaya I don't think I can do this" I whispered, ripping my gaze off the horizon and to her eyes

"Take your time Tom, Morgan and I will wait by the water" She gave me a soft kiss on the cheek before taking our daughter's hand and walking down the beach.

The ocean breeze hit my face sending a slight shiver down my spine. The smell of the salty air and the sound of the waves crashing against the golden sand was all too familiar. 

I took a deep breath in before taking a step, the sand beneath my seat sinking a little with every step. I eventually made it to the edge of the beach where the sand meets the water. 

"Mommy what's daddy doing" I could hear Morgan say

"Come on Morgan, let's let daddy be for a little, we can build sandcastles," Zendaya said 

After that I tuned everything out, only the sound of the waves crashing filled my ears.  I sat down in the sad, not worrying if it got all over me. I took a deep breath in, exhaling slowly while closing my eyes. 

"Sorry I haven't been here since..." I whispered out to nothing, "It just been really hard" I took another breath in, this time it was a little shaky. " I got married" I chuckled, "about 5 years ago, we had a kid a year later" I looked over at my little family building sand castles. "It has been really rough without you, I spent so long hoping that it wasn't real, and for a while, I convinced myself that it was all fake, that I would wake up and you would still be here..." I took my gaze off the ocean and down to the sand, "I guess I was wrong" 

I sat there is silence for a while, my vision started to get fuzzy, tears were building up as I remembered memories from our childhood.

"God I've missed you, Kayla" I took a sharp breath in, "so much. You had such a bright future ahead of you and it was taken away so quickly. I blamed myself, and to be honest I still kind of do, but your mom said you wouldn't want to see me in shambles and I think she's right. You always cared for other people more than you did yourself, always wanted to see them happy even if it hurt you." I felt a tear run down my face stinging the surface of my skin.

I felt a gust of win go past me, I shivered at first before being engulfed in a warm feeling, almost like two arms were wrapped around my shoulders. I closed my eyes causing more tears to fall. I took in a deep breath through my nose except this time I did not smell the ocean breeze, instead, it was the sweet smell of strawberry shampoo... Kayla?

I opened my eyes and the warm feeling went away, but there she was right in front of me. She wore a white silk dress that was being blown around in the wind, her dark brown hair seemed longer. A small smile adorned on her face and her eyes seemed brighter than ever. She had an unrealistic glow to her, something I've never seen before.

"Kayla?" I whispered not believing what was in front of my eyes

"Hello Tom" she spoke, her voice was light and angelic

"This can't be real... how are you here" Fresh tears started to build up in my eyes.

"Does it really matter if it's real or not, I'm here and so are you" She laughed that beautiful laugh that I've missed so much

She sat down in a swift movement.

"I've missed you, Kayla,"  I said, my eyes never leaving hers

"And I've missed you" She put her hand on my cheek rubbing away the tears. Kayla looked over at Zendaya and Morgan, a smile grew on her face, "You have quite the beautiful family Thomas" 

" Yeah, I do don't I," I said, small sobs escaping my lips.

"don't be sad Tom, It's ok" 

" Just really wish you were here" I whispered

"But I am here, I am with you all the time, in here," She said while pointing to my heart. 

 She started to get up, I tried to grab her hand but mine went through hers. I looked at my hand for a second in confusion before looking up at her, sadness in my eyes. She looked down and gave me a sweet smile.

"Where are you going?"I asked

"My time here is up, I must return back to my home," She said while looking up at the clouds.

"But your home is here, with me" I begged

she laughed and shook her head, " My home is up there Thomas and yours is over there," She said while looking at my family

"Please" I whispered

"Goodbye Tommy, one day we will be together" And with that, she was gone, where I will never know.

I finally got up and saw Morgan running towards me. She jumped up into my arms.

"Daddy" She squealed

"Hey pumpkin," I said while giving her a tight hug

"where did the pretty girl go," she asked

"who?" I said quite confused

"The pretty girl you were talking to just now, where did she go" 

" oh her, she went to a better place," I said with a sad smile

"Like heaven" She whispered

"She deserves to go to a better place than heaven," I said, "Let's go over to mommy ok"  she gave me a nod and I set her down. She ran over to Zendaya and I followed right behind. 

"Hey babe," Z said with a smile, "Glad you came" 

"Yeah, thanks for coming, " I said while giving her a soft kiss on the cheek

"No problem love now let's enjoy the rest of our time here before we go home"

"Yeah, definitely" I looked back at the ocean one last time, "Until we meet again" I whispered before returning my gaze back to the family in front of me that I adore so much.

The time that I spent with Kayla was now nothing but a sweet memory

Thank you so much for sticking along on this journey with me. I've had so much fun with this story and a little sad that it is now coming to an end. This was my first ever Wattpad book and I am pretty proud of how it turned out!
