The alarm rang as I pulled he covers over my head. Why had I stayed up till 2, talking to a guy I absolutely hated?
"Because there was some alcohol, that's why." I mumbled as I turned the alarm off. I groaned while I put my hand on my head, a tiny headache forming from to much wine. I rubbed my eyes as I headed to the bathroom, still half asleep.
Once I had done my hair, eaten breakfast, brushed my teeth, and slipped into my ever-fashionable scrubs, I headed out the door and to Saint Victor's Hospital.

"How's your life?" My friend, Tina, wondered. She had dark skin, hair, and eyes, and was very pretty and lots of fun. She was also always interested in her friends' love lives.
"If you're referring to my love life, it's nonexistent." I wrote something down on a patient chart. "All the guys I date are jerks." I grumbled under my breath.
"So date a non-jerk." Melanie, one of my best friends, shrugged. As if it were that simple. Melanie had curly blonde hair down to her shoulders, blue eyes, and was very short. Five foot or shorter. She had a funny little voice, but could belt out power ballads like no one's business.
"Yeah, Girl. Get yourself a fire fighter or a sexy cop." Tina agreed. My love life was every day's feature story.
"And be scared that they'll never come home again? No thank you. It's bad enough we have to watch people die at the tips of our fingers, but to not know where, when, or how your lover is? Not knowing if he's been shot or worse? I couldn't live with that." I shook my head, "I don't know how Marty does it." Marty's husband was a respected detective with the NYPD. I had no idea how she could cope with the fear of losing someone who means so much to you. I didn't know I would eventually find out.
"So what kinda guy do you want?" Tina wondered.
"I want someone who..." I looked at the ceiling sideways before answering. "Looks like Donnie Wahlberg And sings like Frank Sinatra."
My friends laughed, "good luck with that." They left to check on patients.
"Yeah," I said quietly, "good luck."
