I watched as Danny's family left one by one. A small smile spread across my face when Jamie asked if he could have a soda; with Mrs. Reagan sort of agreeing, they left.
Danny and I flirted- Yes, I'd deny that for a long time, but it was flirting.
"Will I see you again?"
I looked almost as surprised to hear that as he did. "Hopefully not like this."
"Huh?"
I explained to him what I meant, asked him if he had had stitches, and I asked if he was a trouble maker.
"Well..." He smiled a little.
"You were a little trouble maker?" I smiled a little.
"More like walking into trouble."
I smiled, "not me. I stay away from trouble. I was the peace maker."
"I bet you were."
I smiled while biting my tongue. I wrinkled my nose and blushed a little more. Obviously, he didn't mean to say that, because he was blushing, too.
"You should only feel me moving."
He looked at the big needle. "Whoa. You're sticking that in my arm?"
"Yeah. Why?"
"Well... isn't a little... big?"
"Are you kidding? This is the small one! Now hold still. This'll take some time."
"How long?"
"I dunno. A few minutes?"
He nodded, making me smile. This tough cop was afraid of needles! Well... I didn't blame him. I hate needles, too.
"Are you ready?"
"Okay."
I stuck the needle in his skin, an audibly sharp inhale quickly afterwards. "You can scream if you want."
"No."
"Just so you know, I won't mind." I tied off the stitch.
"I'm okay." Danny started swing his leg, most likely as a distraction from the pain.
"Please hold still. The more you move the more it's gonna hurt."
"Sorry."
I tied off the second stitch, "okay, Danny, only a few more." As quickly and precisely as I could, I stitched him up. "And.... there. All done. That wasn't so bad, now was it?" I gave him a smile, prompting him to smirk at me.
"Guess not."
"Good." I shucked my my gloves into the trash can. Without realizing what I was doing, I patted his leg, "try not to get shot again." I quickly took my hand back, blushing.
"I'll do my best." Danny responded, his ears red.
"Good....." I stared at him for what seemed like an eternity. He was so adorable! Coming back to my senses, I, yet again, blushed. "The, uh, the front desk's that way..."
Danny's gaze followed my finger. "Thank you."
"You're welcome." And for a moment, we were united. I felt something tug, something pull. And years later, he told me he felt the same magnetic pull.
"Linda, the detectives want you."  Faith stuck her head in.
Frowning and turning around, I answered her, "okay, thank you, Faith."
"You're welcome."
I smiled at Danny, "I have to go now."
"Yeah. I'm sure there's a sea of blue out there anyways."
I looked outside the curtain. Sure enough, I saw police officers. "Are there always that many?"
"Yeah. They show up to show support for the injured officer and their family." Danny jumped off the examination table thing. I never remember what it's called.
"Be careful." I smiled, then frowned. Why did I sound worried?
"Don't worry. I'll be on desk duty for the foreseeable future. Bye, Linda."
"Bye, Danny." And just like that, the sexy cop walked out of my life.... or so I thought.
