"I told you, I'm okay!" I heard from behind a curtain.
"You were shot, how can you be okay?"
I listened for a while, this patient wasn't going to comply. I decided I might be some kind of help. A lot of patients seem to be more comfortable with me. Maybe it was my voice or the way I talked, I don't know. But anything to get me brownie points isn't going to hurt.
"Need some help in here?" All three of them looked at me- two nurses and the patient. My eyes zoomed in on the patient, how could anybody be that gorgeous?!
"He insists he doesn't need any help." Barnes said, annoyance coating his voice.
"You're bleeding," I walked up to his left side and grabbed another gauze pad. Quickly, I changed it and replaced it with a new one.
"It's not a lot." He shrugged, a noticeable wince cane across his face.
"Not a lot is when you rip off a hang nail. This looks like you got shot."
"I did."
I looked at his shirt and jacket laying on a chair, "you're a cop?"
"Yeah. Danny Reagan." He smiled, my heart melting.
"Linda O'Shea." I smiled back, "my guess a flesh wound?"
"Yeah," Steve nodded. "And he's refusing treatment."
"That's cause... I don't need any."
Danny said, a lot less agitation in his voice.
"It'll be fast. Topical freeze gel, stitches, a bandage." I tried to sound nonchalant, "after all, this is very routine."
"Fixing... cop's arms?"
"No. Stitches." I took the gauze pad off his arm, and cleaned up the blood around it. I bit my tongue as my fingers swept over his muscles. This was not a good time to get turned on. I felt the bridge of my nose start to sweat as I pulled out the freezing gel.
"Is that... the tropical... sh!t?" Danny's voice was getting weaker as he talked.
"Topical freezing gel... it'll be cold." As I applied the gel, I added, "stop talking. You should save your energy."
"You think we should keep him over night?" Barnes wondered.
"Nah," Steve shook his head. "An IV for an hour or so, then he's outta here."
"It's gonna be a bit before this gets numb," I told him. "Fifteen minutes, tops. In the meantime, we'll need some blood to see what kinda fluids and such you need."
"Fluids?" Danny raised an eyebrow.
"You lost a lot of blood. It's no big deal."
Barnes went to fetch the IV bag while Steve was needed elsewhere, leaving me and the cute cop alone.
"Got any... sisters or brothers?" Danny smiled at me.
Gee, could I be anymore turned on by this guy? "An older sister and brother."
"So you're... the baby?"
"Yes. Are you related to the... What was the abbreviation she used?"
"PC? Grandpa."
"Oh.... you have, what was it? Three brothers and a sister?"
He nodded, then corrected himself, "two brothers and a sister."
"Poor sister..."
Danny laughed, and I completely fell for him.
Steve came back with the IV, expertly inserting it into the cop's hand.
"You should feel better once those fluids start pumping." Start pumping?! Could I be any more awkward?
