Castiel could feel his heart hammer against his chest. The whole day had been so wonderful, getting to know Dean and talking about their childhood. But alas, sitting here in his living room, worrying about losing his job after only two days wasn't as wonderful.
He'd invited Dean to stay a bit longer, or until they heard from Chuck. They'd left at about 8 o'clock, long after Mr. Shurley had left his office, so they would probably know tomorrow if they could still attend school.
"How could we have been so stupid..." Castiel didn't really mean this as a question, and he was rather saying it to himself than Dean. "I know. I think we just got caught up because we had such a great time." Cas looked at the other man as if he were an alien.
No one has ever talked about a hangout with him like that. Maybe because he didn't really have friends to hang out with. It was as if Dean could see his biggest insecurities and greatest fears. He always managed to say the right thing, the thing Cas needed to hear the most.
"Yeah. You're really fun."
It sounded a bit lame, but Dean appreciated it nontheless. They both didn't have a lot of friends and they liked each other's company. Sometimes, Castiel felt like he's belonged here his entire life. As if destiny dragged him to this country, forced him to settle down and get this job at exactly this highschool.
If this was the case, Castiel couldn't be happier with said 'destiny', because it pushed Dean into his life, gave him a friend, a best friend. It just seemed so meant to be. Not in the romantical way, obviously. But in a really rare, platonic way and Castiel was grateful to whatever force in this universe gave Dean a job at the exact same school.
Cas snapped out of his trance as Dean waved a hand in front of his face. "Chuck wrote me an email. He wants to meet us tomorrow before school."
Castiel only nodded. He didn't know what else to do. Was it a good sign that Chuck wanted to see them? Did he want to give them another chance or did he just find it rude not to fire them in person? The thoughts of already losing his job were spooking through Castiel's head the whole evening.
They were always finding their way back to Cas' mind. Even when Dean left, they didn't let go. So it was really clear why Castiel was so releaved when he was finally able to lie down in his bed and not think about anything as he slowly drifted into a peaceful sleep.
-
The hours before their meeting with Chuck were unbearable. Time went by slowly and Castiel's nervousness increased minute by minute. Finally, it was time to leave and within a few minutes, Cas found himself in the garage of his -maybe soon-to-be- former workplace.
When Castiel arrived at Chuck's office, Dean was already sitting in one of the brown leather chairs in front of the heavy table. He was greeted with a 'how'd ya sleep?'
"Okay. You?" Dean grunted in response. Luckily, they didn't have to wait for a long time until Chuck entered the office with a sour face.
He didn't even bother greeting them, he just got straight to the point.
"You idiots."
He ignored Castiel and Dean's frowns and continued.
"How could you just forget school? This time, I managed helping you out and giving your students exercises to solve. Next time, it's your own responsibility."
"So..." Dean began the sentence Cas finished without thinking. "...we're not fired?!"
Chuck shook his head and watched with amusement how the two men in front of him sprung from their seats and hugged each other like a teenage couple.
