Ryan woke up to Shane pacing around, deep in thought. He sits up groggy as hell, and stared at his boyfriend for a few seconds.
"Shane?" he asked tentatively.
Shane snapped his head up, eyes wide and alert. His hair stuck out it all different directions, but he still managed to look cute. "Hm? How long have you been awake?"
"Not long. What are you doing? You look... upset?"
Shane sighed, running a hand through his hair, although it did nothing to tame the mess. He moved to perch on the edge of the bed next to Ryan and showed him a note in his hand. Ryan tilted his head to peer at the words, and what he read made his throat go dry. The note was written in blood red writing, that was sticky and wet.
Dear Traitor,
Us demons down here in Hell, miss our older brother very much. We want him back. So you can imagine our surprise when, in our most valiant efforts to get our family back, you send us away. We've even heard that, to our surprise, you've managed to love a human being! We're very disappointed in you, Shane, and we'd like to express our feelings like a real family does. Meet us where this all started, the Penitentiary, tomorrow morning at 4. If you do not come, we will destroy everything to try and find you. You must bring your human companion, or we'll happily kill his family and friends, including him.
All our regards,
Sally and the rest.
Ryan fixed his wide, fearful eyes on Shane, then moves to get out of bed, throwing on some clothes that were tossed on the floor the night before.
"What are you doing, Ry?" Shane asked, following Ryan with his eyes.
Ryan pauses, pants halfway on his body.
"Uhhh, getting ready? Why aren't you?"
"Getting ready for what?" Shane asks, cocking his head to the side. Ryan looks back at him equally confused.
"Running away? What else are we getting ready for?" Shane's eyes widen.
"Ryan, we can't run away! What about your friends and family? I'd love to run away with you but there's too much to lose here!" Shane grabbed Ryan's hands in his own and sat him down. "I know, I don't want to bring you along either but Ry, we can't kill others for this. This is my fight we can't-"
"Our fight." Ryan interrupted.
"What?" Shane asked.
"It's our fight Shane. Not your. Ours." Ryan looked up to Shane, and Shane was surprised by the iron look in his eyes as Ryan squeezed his hands. He could sense Ryan was scared, but there was bravery there too. Shane felt a rush of multiple emotions rush over him. Pride, happiness, fear, but mostly love.
"Okay, Ry. Our fight. Either way, I don't want you to get hurt. The most damage you can do is theorize people to death."
Ryan rolled his eyes. "You can't change my mind, Shane. And I can put up a decent fight, Asshat."
Shane sighed.
"I know." He smiled and leaned in close to his boyfriend, took his chin and kissed him softly. It was nice to stay and bask in the moment, ignoring the looming danger in the near future. For now, Ryan just wanted to kiss his boyfriend and cuddle while watching a show. It was a nice change from the past few hectic days. They spent the day trying not to think about the letter, the demons, and the outside world, perfectly content in each others presence. They would need their energy for the next morning, where hopefully their troubles will finally end.
