The light chirps and whistles from the early birds fill in the soft morning air, as I stood outside on the old porch. The old porch belongs to an old small house that I just moved in a few days ago. The place seems like it came from a swamp. I observe the dead grass that covered most of the front yard with a pavement path cutting through the middle, leading up to a rusty chain linked gate.
I close my eyes and concentrated on breathing in the early fresh air.
"It's a new day.." I grip the straps on my black backpack, trying to recollect my thoughts.
Knowing my life too well with unlucky results. I nervously thought about what could go wrong today. Today is different. Today is when I start fresh. Today is the day I really wish would go by fast.
"I hate school" I ruffle my hair with a deep sigh.
I hate this overwhelming feeling, but not as much as I hate school. I never had a good experience at school. For others it may seem like just a place to learn and grow up. For me, it's a place of bad and unwanted memories. I's a shame that I don't have a choice to stop going there..
Before I could take a step off the porch, I hear the sound of my door creak open behind me.
"Grayson" My mom said at the doorstep as I turn to see her tired blue eyes.
My mom is in her saggy pajama pants with a loose shirt, which I know she just woke up out of bed. She scratches her blonde messy bobbed hair.
"Come over here" My mom tiredly said.
I gave her a confuse look. I know my mom too well. She wants something from me. She never wakes up this early in the morning. My mom usually just sleeps through until she wakes around in the afternoon, and there I see her, wondering what she wants this time.
I walk up to her, not saying a word or even bothering to look her in the eyes. She holds up a folded bill in her hand that she got out of her pocket. Then I look her in the eyes.
"Do me a favor will ya Gray?" My mom clears her throat.
I'm used to her raspy morning voice. I take the bill from her hand as I unfold the money to reveal a $5 bill.
"What do you want me to do?" I ask my mom.
"You know that liquor store a few blocks from here?" I nod in response. "Well buy some drinks before coming home from school"
Wow. I couldn't believe what I just heard. She really has the time to do this to me, and on the first day of school..
I squeeze the bill in my hand in anger.
"Mom.. really? No" I shook my head in disbelief. "I'm not doing that"
"Why not?" My mom said with a fake motherly tone.
"Because it's my first day of school at a new place" I said in defense. "You should already know that. I don't want people to see me go in a liquor store as a student buying drinks. I might get caught and get in trouble cuz I'm underage"
My mom stood silent for a moment. She quickly raises her hand, making me flinch. I look away as I tightly shut my eyes to get ready for an incoming smack, but instead she just snatches the bill away from my hand out of anger. Without saying a word, she slams the door shut with a loud rattling sound. I flinch again. This is one of the few times that I stood up against my mom.
I smirk. At least it's one thing to make this day feel a bit less painful. I sigh once again, walking off the porch and on to the pavement path. I open the front gate, then I close it back when I got out. I pause myself before I begin walking, gripping the handles on my backpack. I close my eyes, breathing in deep once more to regain my thoughts.
