Eweh and Edeh were hiding in the dark, among the dense trees that bordered their mysterious opponent. Upon hearing the plan, Eweh was skeptical about their ability to deliver this quest but his sister had grown fixated on the idea that it was possible to weakening the night princess with a swift tear of her skin with their glass arrows.
Eweh had not clearly seen her on the day that they had lost, he had flown higher leading the army from above, his sister had been stationed on the lower end, while their commander lead the front. He remembered being startled as he saw something cover their leader from the back then came the black mist covering the rest of the army, Eweh wanted to shout for retreat but the mist had reached him then, engulfing him in sin and sorrow.
"She said, the princess comes outside every evening to nestle that big pet off hers, we will catch her unaware, all those armies can't do anything for her now , she is going to hope those spirits taught her to fight." Let's hope they never did. Eweh didn't answer.
His sister carried a bow, the arrow bag was sling across her back; Eweh carried a lance, one end held a long-curved knife, the other had a barbed tip made of glass.
"The hour draws near, let's hide behind the raised terrace wall." Eweh used his spear to direct her sister. They crawled in all fours, their wings dragging behind them, flattening the leaves that circled the lonely cave. Just as they reached the shadow behind the wall, they heard the white beast flinging its wings, sounding restless.
"What's wrong with my lovely prince. Lour it's time to sleep why do you fret?" She really does float. Eweh and Edeh had not heard the night girl exit the cave. Eweh raised his head to spy the princess's position. He saw the bird stand tall his wings unfurled, the size of the bird was overwhelming but the little girl underneath remained unintimidated.
Eweh mouthed "now" to Edeh and they flapped their wings in unison, stopping overhead the princess in two waves.
Edeh had already drawn her longbow, arrow stationed. Just as the princess turned to locate the source of the stir, Edeh released.
When the arrow neared her chest a black mist went through it or the arrow went through the mist, it lost its momentum and dropped to the floor. The princess's surprise didn't last long. She turned her full attention to them, Eweh noticed she was dressed in a practical gear of black leather pants and jacket. Edeh shot another and another but all were ceased by the mist.
"Come closer brave fighters." The princess's hair had gone from silver to a glowing white resembling her eyes. Two whips had appeared on her arms, they were black as night and looked like the devil's tentacles, she held them towards the inner end, the dark wire curled around her fingers.
Before they could react they heard the whips crackle and the wires were around their midriffs, pulling them down with a force so great their wide wings failed to battle. Eweh felt the impact of his chest to the ground like a slap of thunder. He looked at his sister. Edeh had recovered faster and was trying to sit up, her bow discarded, a hand on the tilt of her sword. Eweh was amazed to find his lance still on his palm.
"Stand, bold soldiers, I want this to be a fair fight." Eweh and Edeh found their footing, each stood to the side of the night princess. Eweh recognized the face he saw but he couldn't back down, an enemy is an enemy no matter how familiar.
Eweh attacked first, he stormed forth, his spear raised, aiming for the girl's neck, his sister was charging on the other side, her sword aiming for the princess's back.
The night girl bent her back backwards escaping his attack, she secured her hand on his spear getting a firm grip and lifted her legs curling them around his neck, his sisters sword was now directed at him until the girl twisted her lower limbs, removing him from the target. In a flash she had let go, jumped and landed behind him.
His sister attacked again screaming, the night deity stood still waiting silently, when the sword's point was about her she turned to her side, removing her shoulder from the pointy end, as the sword passed in front of her, Edeh still clutching its tilt she captured his sister by the shoulder, one of the princess's arm was around Edeh's neck and the other around her arm, she pushed them both to their knees and tightened the hold, his sister started choking, searching for air.
"On your knees," she whispered to him, his sister was turning blue under her clutch. Eweh threw his lance instead, his aim had always been perfect. He was sure the slim sharp end was perfectly aimed for the dark princess's forehead and it would reach her before she had time to free her hands to defend herself.
The girl arched her back backwards again, bending Edeh with her to escape the spear. When they fell, Edeh wriggled from the grip and crawled reaching for the same sword her brother was now sprinting too, their backs faced the night girl.
They heard another crackle of the whips that had magically appeared in the girl's hands, the end of the leather weapon hit their spine, right at the center below their necks where the roots of their wings met. Eweh and his sister fell, paralyzed, their bodies felt heavier than mountains.
The dark princess pulled back the whips and set them again on their necks; Then she pulled. Her eyes a bright light, hair flying, her fury evident. Eweh started losing his sight, he couldn't breathe, think or talk, he felt his neck breaking. "Spare my sister" he wanted to shout, but he couldn't take in the breath to voice it.
"Shengena! Stop! You're going to kill them", that was the last thing he heard as the darkness enveloped him. I am going to hell.
* * *
Eweh opened his eyes, he was floating through the night, only darkness moved above him. I am going to hell. It's better than a black oblivion.
"Where are you taking them?" demanded a voice, the same voice that had commanded their opponent to stop. I am still alive. Eweh tried to tilt his head to find his sister, but a sharp pain shot down his back, he decided to stay still.
"I have to heal them, the whips were given to me by the mermaids, they are stingray tails of the night, I have to absorb the poison back." Eweh could tell this voice belonged to their victorious opponent.
"We will never have peace, now the chiefs will really want you exiled, how do we hide this?"
"I don't gain much from killing these two, besides I didn't find them, they found me, to kill me, they were using glass arrows, someone told them a false legend of weakening the night princess."
Eweh realized the moving darkness was the roof of the cave corridor leading to the warrior's cave. The cave was bright, a crackling fire casting shadows on the ceiling. He floated towards the corner of the cave and was laid on a soft surface, the edge of the roof above the surface was lined by a delicate transparent fabric falling to the ground. He saw a black mist rise when he was lightly placed on what he assumed was a bed.
"Why do you put him on your bed, the floor would suffice."
"I have to lay next to him for my skin to suck the poison, and am not about to sleep on this cold floor."
"What about his sister?"
"They are twins, I only need to remove it from one of them to remove it all, I would have chosen the sister but I know you would dislike that more so she lies on the further corner." The other voice groaned.
"Is laying with him in one bed necessary."
"It is and I have to hurry Iriel, if these two die the silver lands will have a pledged enemy and me to blame for it. You should go find who directed these two here, they are the second in command after Naro."
"Oh Shengena, why is the universe so cruel?"
"Iriel go, Lour will block the door, she will only let the child enter, tell him to come with food on sunrise, white mushrooms."
Iriel groaned one last time then Eweh heard feet rustle away, their sound fading. Then he heard the white beast howl again then it was silent. The light in the room started fading and Eweh fell back to his dark hell.
