"Domino" the karma killers
Just like always, Joey spent her morning getting ready for another New York day. Everyone in New York had a different routine they went through. Some never slept so they didn't need to get ready for another day, while others went through a ten step process so they were dressed to impress. They would walk through the streets with confidence and pride on their shoulders ready to take on the world. They would concur any new challenge they faced with ease and look good doing it.
New York is the city where people fake it until they make it.
Joey followed that motto as if it were her source of power because in a way, it is.
She woke up early to go on a jog around the neighborhood before coming home to freshen up and making breakfast for her grandfather and herself. She would also whip up something for her grandfather to eat for lunch. Most days she would have some pizza she brought home from work so he could have it the next day, but other times she would make mac and cheese, or spaghetti for him. His favorite meal was her household famous mushroom soup. She had found one of her grandma's recipes a few years before and made it any time Dakota came home from the hospital or her grandfather reached his steps goal for the day, which was hardly ever due to the fact that he had never felt like it. She argue with him to exercise so he didn't sit on the couch all day, but he always made excuses saying he couldn't miss an episode of this or that.
Today was different. She had the afternoon shift so she was going to spend so time with her grandfather and watch the decathlon. Unfortunately, she would only get to see the beginning of the competition, but she was going to record it regardless.
"what t-time is Kota coming h-home today?" grandpa Jones asked as he wiped the milk dribbling down his chin away with a napkin. he was eating fruity pebbles at the kitchen table, full view of the competition playing on the T.V. screen.
Ned had come over a few times before and in turn became friendly with her grandpa. Jones enjoyed whenever the boy came over since the only company he ever got was his two granddaughters and occasionally Ms. Bronte who lives down the hall will come by to keep him company. she was a kind women, only a few years younger than Jones. She had been divorced twice with three children who were already grown. after her last child moved out and she split up with husband number two, she moved out to Queens and as lived in their building ever since. she had become friends with Jones long before the girls moved in with him and she was like an Aunt to them. she spoiled the girls rotten, but she hasn't come around in a while. she went to visit her son and his new family for a while, leaving Jones alone during the day.
"I get off work at six today so I was going to get her then. It's gonna be kinda late, but I don't she minds too much." Joey knew that even if she forgot her little sister at the hospital, she wouldn't be alone. her best friend was there and as much as Dakota denied it, she was content with spending time at the hospital. that's not to say she didn't love the comfort of her own bed, but she got to see some of her friends anytime she was there.
"I yelled at Sal this morning to get the elevator fixed and i'm sure he's going to get it working by the time we get back tonight." Sal was their stereotypical landlord like the ones in the movies. he had a beer-belly and rarely smiled. he feed on the tears and frustration of his tenants. she and many other tenants had been asking him to fix the elevator for a couple of weeks, but he never listened. finally, Joey snapped and gave him a piece of her mind. he continued to refuse until she was forced to use her sister's cancer card.
both girls hated having to use the cancer angle to get what they wanted. Dakota wanted to be treated like everyone else, not broken or fragile, but there were some things that couldn't go without mentioning her sickness. Joey never saw her sister different when she first got sick, but every time she had to pull out the cancer card, she felt like her sister was slowly disappearing. her sister had always been strong, and anytime she was forced to bring up her cancer to get business done, it felt like her sister was truly becoming weaker. she had faith that she would get better, but in those moments it seemed the opposite.
