"Ophelia" the Lumineers
Dakota took a bit of her blueberry flavored donut and shifted in her comfortable seat. she looked over the pile of cards in her hands, trying to think of the best move to make in her intense game of gin rummy. Joey watched her sister closely, wondering if she would pick a card from the mystery deck, or grab multiple from the discard pile.
a cheeky grin crept onto the the younger Wolff's face as she decided what she would do. she pulled the ace of spades from the very bottom of the discard pile, taking seven other cards with her. she threw down the ace along with two others in her hand. Kota wasn't done with her turn however; she used a nine of hearts to bridge the gap between the eight, ten, and jack she was holding onto. then came another set of clubs ranging between two and six. before Joey knew it, her little sister was discarding a two of spades, only having one card left in her hand.
"you little shit!" Joey exclaimed, still having five cards left in her hand, two of which were high value. a women seated in a nearby chair glanced over at the two girls, annoyed at the amount of noise they were making. "we agreed not to play dirty. you can't have a set of aces, that isn't fair!" Dakota just shrugged innocently, taking another bit of her half eaten donut.
"life's not fair." she scratched around the location of the needle in her arm that administered her chemo drip into her body. Dakota didn't have to say anything to say anything to show exactly what she meant. Joey rolled her eyes, but left it alone as she tried to focus back on the game.
"I'm just saying, there's no honor in winning this way." Joey's guilt trips never worked though. Joey picked up a card from the mystery pile, finding it to be useless and throwing it into the discard pile with a frustrated sigh. "I swear if you win right now I'm never buying you donuts again."
Dakota picked up another card, a loud burst of laughter erupting from her throat before playing the card and discarding the one in her hand. "I know you're a sore loser, but don't keep the donuts hostage. that's just cruel."
"fine, but no more playing dirty. it's worse than the plus four cards in Uno." Joey grumbled as she gathered all the cards to shuffle.
a small silence filled the hospital room the girls were in other than the sound of cards shuffling. neither girl minded, allowing them to settle from the commotion they just caused.
"I picked out a dress." Kota spoke, finally breaking the silence. she pulled out the Macy's catalog she was looking through before Joey arrived. she had to work that morning and got her neighbor, Ms. Bronte to drive Dakota to the hospital for chemotherapy. as soon as Joey got off of work, she stopped to get some donuts and headed over to the hospital to keep her little sister company. "you know what size I am, right?"
Joey looked at the beautiful purple dress Dakota circled and smiled knowing how perfect it was for her sister. purple had always been Dakota's favorite color and she could already tell the cut would accent her figure well without showing off too much skin. she knew her sister would look amazing at the homecoming the hospital was throwing for the kids that couldn't go to their own.
"of course. I can go shopping tomorrow." Joey was working in the morning and would have the afternoon off. she traded shifts with Kate because the older women had to pick up her in-laws from the airport.
"okay good." she said, but Dakota seemed off. her eyes darted to her lap as she chipped away the nail polish on her fingers. Joey noticed the change in her mood and set the cards down on the table to focus solely on her sister.
"what's going on?"
"It's just-" Dakota forced her eyes to look at her sister's. "do you think August would be upset if I didn't want to do to the homecoming?" she was nervous for the answer knowing how excited he was to go with her. she was excited too, until that morning when a realization hit her.
