"When we were young" lost kings

the day had passed by slowly as it always did. Joey was at work for the past 6 hours, serving pizzas at Lorrenzo's and cleaned off tables. working there was not too difficult and she would use her short breaks for short online classes as per usual. no one seemed to really notice or care that the girl was never actually at school during the day, but that was more from they way she scheduled her shifts. always after 2:30pm unless it was a weekend in which case she worked 10 hours, usually taking up her whole day. when she wasn't working she was shopping for food, checking in on her grandfather, supplying for another trip to the pawn shop, or with her sister.

she may have stopped to see her sister during the day, but she also made it a point to visit after ever shift, bringing her some food, or just some extra comfort depending on how the day was.

today was not a food day. instead, she brought her something much less eatable, but still quiet nice.

when she finally arrived at Dakota's room, her little sister was reading a book, the tv on quietly in the background. joey knocked lightly on the door before entering to signal her presence, throwing her bag on the chair in the room before sitting on the edge of her bed. Kota looked up with a smile as she placed a book mark in the crack of pages. she closed the book and put it on the small desk beside her, giving her older sister her undivided attention.

"i was wondering if you'd show tonight." the youngest Wolff teased. the color was drained from her face and exhaustion weighed her body down, but she was willing to wait up long enough to see her sister that night.

"sorry, i didn't mean for you to wait up for me." joey apologized, rubbing her eyes from exhaustion as well. she had been on her feet most of the day and hadn't sat down in hours, not until now. "i was closing and this one family was taking forever to eat. i thought about shoving the pizza down their throats, but I would've been fired so i decided against it." she joked, earning a soft laugh from Dakota.

"It's fine."

joey noticed how weak her little sister was looking and her smile was replaced with concern. "how are you feeling? still nauseous or just tired now?" she questioned, placing a hand on her sister's blanket covered leg in comfort.

Dakota was an outpatient usually, but she had gotten a cold while going through chemotherapy and had to stop treatments in order for the doctors to stop her cold from getting worse. To joey a cold was easily fixed with some rest and hot tea, but for a girl with a weak immune system it would require a hospital stay and a very close watch from the doctors and nurses.

Dakota just shrugged. "mostly tired now. Haven't really been able to sleep much." Her eyes were dark, proving her statement to be true.

before Joey could say anything in comfort, a familiar voice burst into the small room. he had been wearing some comfortable pajamas with blue and black strips going across the shirt. "quick! turn on the news!" August rushed as he moved passed the girls and grabbed the remote. Even with very little energy left in the boy's body, he still managed to show an incredible amount of excitement for the one and only spiderman.

"well hello to you too." Joey rolled her eyes, amused at the boy she had known for years now. when Dakota was first diagnosed with leukemia she was in a terrible place mentally, they all were really. but it wasn't until her first chemo treatment when Dakota met the goofy boy that her spirits we finally lifting. they had become best friends in and out of the hospital. Joey grew close to the boy as well, thinking of him as a little brother.

"hey." he simply replied before shushing them and turning the volume up enough so they could all hear.

"last night New York's spider-man fought four men dressed in avengers masks. the destruction had also effected Delmar's deli across the street. authorities are still searching for the culprits, no thanks to the webslinger." the news caster stated, not holding back on their biased opinions.
