Inuyasha promises on his family name that he would alwas protect Kagome, but goes back on his word when he goes to hell with Kikyo. Unknowingly going there alone because Kikyo has no soul and the soul she was using was in fact Kagome's.
The Kamis now have to send a message to one of Inuyasha's relatives to watch after and protect Kagome for the rest of their eternal lives. Since she is the Shikon Miko and has got eternal life to protect the jewel.
