I personally believe that Asexuals/Aromantics are Lgbt+ but I can understand why people view otherwise.
I'm simply writing this chapter to explain my view of it, you are most definitely allowed to have your own view point
If you'd like, you can share your own view point here ➡️
First I would like to say that Aromantics/ Asexuals that have an Lgbt+ identity attached to them are automatically Lgbt+ and not up for debate.Which is great for you guys!! 😊
The problem everyone has is Hetero-romantic Asexuals, Aromantic Heterosexuals, and Aro- Aces (Aka meee)
From what I've seen nobody seems to even acknowledge that Aro/Aces exist when they post discourse.... They only call out Aces/Aros with a Hetero title...
This puts me in a odd places because I'm unsure if I'm part of the discourse. However I'm pretty neutral about the situation, if you think I'm lgbt+ that's great! If you think I'm not... Then I'll just be the greatest Aro/Ace Ally the world has ever seen!
However this post is about my opinion so I'm going to state it!
(Aka I'm spilling the asexualiTEA)
Reasons why Aromantics and Asexuals are lgbt+
Reason 1- Visibility is a big problem in the asexual community (and definitely even more so for the aromantic community) that is why Asexual Awareness week is even a thing. By being visible and being acknowledged: we prevent people feeling broken, people forcing themselves into romantic/sexual relationships, we promote self love for yourself AND your identity! By being in the lgbt+ community we are gaining visibility and gain respect as a orientation! You may be wondering why visibility for Asexuals/ Aromantics is so important... the reason is that asexuality is still considered an illness (hypoactive sexuality disorder) and that healthy (asexual) people could be diagnosed with it because they don't know their own orientation. Yes the illness has a "loophole" that asexuality doesn't count as the illness, but if we're not well- know... What difference does it make?
Reason 2- We are an orientation that goes against societal norms. By being Asexual, you are not being Heterosexual meaning you are going against heteronormativity! If you're Aromantic, you are going against heteronormativity as well! If you're both (like me) then you're just not hetero in the slightest 😊
Reason 3- Believe it or not, we were involved in the initial stonewall riots! By excluding us, you are ignoring your own history
Reason 4- We do not fit in with the straight community. Yes I know y'all say "Just have your own community" but Lgbt+ people STILL have their own communities! I don't see why we have to be in the middle area where we are "too queer" to be straight but "too straight" to be lgbt+Reason 5- The Lgbt+ community was first made as a safe place for people who are not: Hetero-romantic, heterosexual, and cisgender. I'm only one of those (Cisgender) so I don't see why I'm not included....
Reason 6: Most Lgbt+ identities are over-sexualized by media and by cishets, so by having a group in your community (Asexuals) that literally CAN'T be sexualized.... You can start tearing away from those stereotypes
Reason 7: It helps Aro/Ace people feel less broken! Yes we will never experience the harmful oppression other sexualities have faced, but having a community that ACTUALLY accepts us will make us feel less broken and wrong. Aphobia DOES exist! By saying it doesn't, you are overwriting : The Aces who have been raped because of their identity, The Aros who put themselves in relationships (no matter how abusive) because they think they have to, The Aros/Aces who's parents don't believe them, and the aro/aces forced into therapy or to take medication
NOT ALL OPPRESSION IS EQUAL❗❗ Y'all always say "pain is relative, pain is pain even if others have it worse" so why doesn't our oppression and sadness mean anything!
Reason 8: It gives new/ questioning Aro/Aces validity. It gives them a community of DIVERSITY who believes in them. Acceptance is always amazing!
Reason 9: It shows how accepting and loving a community you are! While everyone hates you, you still open your "doors" and your hearts to others unlike you! Why make fun of other orientations, when you made this community to escape that yourselves!
Reason 10: We're a strong, beautiful community! From both sides we experience almost nothing but hate... YET WE'RE STILL PROUD!! We still love the Lgbt+ community and the Cishet community, we just want understanding!! Through it all, this community remains happy and hopeful 💛 We have faith that one day, we can ALL be accepted 🏳️🌈🏳️🌈
Who wouldn't want people like that in their community?
If you think I missed a reason please put it here ➡️
