Alone, alone, all, all alone,

Alone on a wide wide sea!

And never a saint took pity on

My soul in agony.

----------------------------------------------------

"Truth" is a concept as infinitely small and infinitely large as you'd like it to be. In Indonesian, the most common word for it is kebenaran, which encompasses its most basic meaning. But what is truth? Is it the act of telling facts versus falsehoods? Is it reality versus imagination? If you would like to claim the latter, perhaps hakikat will suit you better.

Sirens have four words for truth. The first, fiirmoni, is the most easily translatable and corresponds with the human concept of relaying factual information. The second, niansetyam, is the abstract idea of truths formed from an understanding of what is unseen but indisputably real - perhaps the closest word to describe it would be "belief," though it goes much deeper than that. The third, qhoviitas, can only be described as a truth found through discovering new information.

The fourth, however, cannot be translated into any human alphabet. It is the purest truth there is and there is no proper way to explain it in our tongue. It is the truth of one's deepest, rawest desires. It is the truth of its fulfillment, though in this case, "truth" and "fact" are not always synonymous. It is the beginning, the end, and every possible meaning of anything found between and within the two.

Its sound? It is a song. It is a shout. It is a wail and a warcry. It is laughter and whispers. The second its first syllable is uttered, you will surely throw yourself into the sea.

The siren language is rooted in truth above all else. It has to be - for what other incentive would we humans give ourselves to their hunger? Truth. The truth in our beliefs, in our wants, in our lies. That's what we drown for.

Kim Taehyung was a liar.

"Fuck!"

The word was a roar of frustration, salt water siphoning into his mouth and out through his gills in a swarm of tiny bubbles. Voda was cold against his scaly hide, no longer a soothing caress but a chilling clutch.
