Chapter 8

Wyatt

Amber keeps leading me towards the back of buildings, although it makes sense, I don't think catching rides on a plane to a secret testing lab is legal. I don't think the government would agree if you told them or even asked them about it.

"Ember, you said it was another block ahead, I think it's been three, maybe four."

"Fine, if you want out, the place where we left is back that way, take a left around the red brick building."

I rolled my eyes and told her to keep moving. The only reason I didn't take off was because Caroline's in trouble, she needs me, I can almost feel it.

Almost.

We walk up behind an old shed for planes and air crafts- it makes sense.

I then see it, I almost want to chicken out of this idea when I see what my hands and body are getting into.

It's rusted after all the years it's been sitting around. Half of the paint is either scraped or peeled off. A stench fills the air.

"Did something die in there?" I pinch my nose, trying to block out the smell, but it made it's way into my nose already. "Does it even work anymore?" I ask with a very doubtful feeling.

"Just shut up, and get in the plane."

I think she was tired of me by now, I'm impressed Caroline's held up for all these years, and I sort of feel like I've been treating her awfully, even though I know it's not true.

"Wyatt, in the plane, now." Her foot taps the dirt impatiently.

I slowly open the door, expecting it to fall off, but it stays in its hinges. I climb into the plane and I see the interior.

The seats are pretty much frames now, no real cushion to make you comfortable. It begins to reek of smoke and old cigarettes like the hotel Caroline and I stayed in. I see a piece of sandwich bread on the ground near my feet, it is covered in stuff that's ten times worse than mold, I get one last glimpse and I'm pretty certain there's a giant cockroach underneath it.

Amber gets in the plane, she looks fine, as if the rotting bread, old cigar smell, and hard, metal seats didn't make any difference to her.

"Hold-," I start to say, but I don't have enough time to finish my sentence before I open the door again and throw up.

"Gross," she says looking at me with a disgusted face.

For Caroline, all for Caroline, I tell myself, not daring to look down again.

She sticks in a copper key and I feel myself vibrating, "You sure you know how to do this? And not get us caught by the government?"

"Yeah, my friend taught me how."

And before I knew it, I was looking down thousands of feet from where we once were.

I've heard of planes, but have never been in one. It's a strange sensation to be in the air, at first I felt like throwing up again but then I felt like I was flying, which was true. It was amazing. I totally forgot about the stench of the place, and Caroline. I could see for miles around, I could even see the distant city where I used to live.

Amber looks over at me and smiles at my gawking, "Pretty cool, right?"

I answer, "Not just cool, AMAZING!!"
