Chapter 12
Wyatt
I hate that kid. And I hate that he was hitting on Caroline, it makes me sick. I don't care if he or his girlfriend, or both of them, die. I don't let Caroline stop, we need to get as far away as possible. We can discuss a plan later, but not now, not while we're so close to the base. We stay near the trees for cover. My head is still a bit dizzy from Ryder punching me, but I close it out and continue running.
Must... stop... too... tired...
Caroline drops my hand and almost falls to the ground panting.
"Come on, we have to keep going, we lost enough time already. You can do it."
I guess she's out of breath for words. No, I can't. Ryder beat me up before you came. I'm bruised everywhere, I can't believe I'm not dead yet. I can't breathe well, my nose and two ribs are still bruised, even after the doctor's magic. And my wrist is still slightly sprained.
I notice that she doesn't have any sort of wraps or bandages around her nose or wrist.
"Where are the bandages?"
They already healed me with their high-tech inventions, which doesn't require any wraps afterward, although it does take some time.
"Caroline, we've only gone about two miles, they will find us if we don't get out of here and as far away as possible."
She doesn't get up off of the ground, she did collapse.
"You're not faking for that Ryder are you?"
She doesn't reply.
"What? You're kidding me, right? Oh my gosh, of all people, you choose that-," I say, shaking my head with a sigh.
"NO! It's not him, gosh," she yells while unsteadily standing up again. "You're so blinded you can't even see that you're sister is actually seriously hurt. Don't forget that I'm the one who hurt him, who gave him that disability."
She walks past me, her shoulder knocks mine. She doesn't even turn around when she says, "And Wyatt, I don't like people who talk crap about other people behind their backs. Especially if it's a not-so-nice word."
Who the heck does she think she is, she acts like she's one of the bratty girls from school. And why did she probably tolerate every swear word that Ryder called me, yet when it comes down to me, she has me hold my tongue?
I storm up behind her. "I came to get you, to save you, and you haven't said a single thank you, maybe I should've just stayed at home, bought a house, and leave you to die."
She's so smart in her words, "You say that, but you would never do it."
"Fine you can just return to that lab, maybe your death will actually do something, maybe you could actually help someone out, instead of hurting them," I spit out, before even thinking about it.
"I don't hurt people," she whispers. I feel she's on the edge of crying.
I'm so fed up with all of this, very little sleep in the past few days and exhaustion really make to cranky. I won't let my sister back down now. Both of us were pulled into this mess and now we have to deal with this, simple as that.
"Don't break down crying, don't be pathetic," I say, mad at her. She's being so petty and girlish. Just about the last thing we need right now.
We still stand in the middle of the trees, I'm so angry right now. I feel sweat forming on my neck. I hear a noise from above and I see a jet searching the trees. It's force pushes the branches of the trees down. Caroline's eyes look glossy, but don't seem like they'll go any farther than that.
