Chapter 5

Caroline

What do these people want with me?

I am in some sort of underground room with machines hooked up to me, wires cover my face and my hands are locked to my sides. I'm helpless.

A sliding door opens and a strange man walks in. Half of his face looks dry and rough, the outlines of his eyes are a dark shade and his lips are cracked. He wears a fancy suit and tie, and his gray hair is styled.

I stutter at first, "Wh- Where am I?"

"A secret testing lab."

"Why?"

Two more men come in, I recognize them, they were my kidnappers. Their faces are masked and I don't even see their eyes.

"Well that, my dear, is what I'm about to tell you," says the gray-haired man, "don't worry, we won't hurt you."

I don't like this, any of it, I want to go home. My pulse quickens and I make sure that they're able to see my anger and urge to rebel against them.

"You can't think I could possibly believe that when I'm locked up and machines are hooked to my body."

"Listen closely, we are an agency that was made to kill the strange virus that has been going around, we are hunting down the source of it. We-," he begins but stops to stare at me.

"So what, I'm your source?" I yell, not expecting to.

"No, we believe you know how to stop everything."

The two men come over to me and take the wires off of me. They tap the screens of the machines and my hands are set free, though not for long, they grab my wrists and we all walk into another room with a huge hologram in front of us.

People in white clothes, who I assume are scientists, sit at computers. A large glass table stands under a large hologram. The hologram shows numerous things, starting with the shard of glass that was in my leg. I stare in awe of it all.

"We heard results from the hospital you were at, they reported signs of something abnormal, something unusual. We traced the results to you, now if I may ask, where did you find the glass?" asks one of the scientists.

Her hair is flashes of colors, starting with red, black, brown, and finally blonde, it's cut short and curls inward around her neck. She has pale skin and wears glasses twice as big as the ones I've seen. She's probably the youngest scientist I've seen, I'm guessing maybe eighteen, nineteen, possibly twenty.

"I don't know, I was in the market and I fell, then got cut on the glass. We went to the hospital and they told us that it was a pretty severe infection. They got it out of me though."

"They got the glass out but not the minerals, it appears this piece is not from any of the nations, sir," says the scientist talking to the gray-haired man.

She walks over to me and holds out her hand.

"I'm Naomi. You are?"

"Caroline, Caroline Bennett," I say trying to shake her hand, but my guards make no movement to let me.

Naomi smiles and says, "Forgive our...policies. I'm afraid we have had some rough times here."

I just nod and turn back to the hologram closest to me. Naomi walks towards it and changes the picture it's projecting. Now it shows a picture, like an x-ray, but it's of my leg, from the hospital. Naomi mentions and motions to several different parts of my leg. I'm listening though I'm looking for an escape route. I noticed that there are electronic locks on all the doors. Each of them has a keypad to unlock the door, I watch as scientists go to the door he covers his hand and punches in the code quickly so I can't tell it is.
