Chapter 13

Caroline

My eyes feel heavy, and my body feels numb. I can't feel anything. Maybe I'm dead. Stupid, I'm not dead, obviously. If I was, I wouldn't be able to smell the scent I sense now. Something like a mixture of mint and...spice? My eyes shoot open.

A ceiling. I'm staring at a ceiling. On the ceiling is a light, a chandelier I think, like one we used to have when we lived with my parents. I used to say it looked like a bunch of golden, glowing diamonds hanging from the ceiling, that's what I think they look like now. My eyes move to my right. A window, it's bright outside, the sun must be out.

My eyes move to my left. A dresser made of dark wood with a wall of water behind it. I sit up and find myself in a bed. Strange. Last I remember is blocking Wyatt before Amber was going to... punch him?

Gosh, my head hurts.

It'll probably take some time, I'm sorry about...Amber.

Did I hear who I thought I did? Did my personally stuff just go to him?

Ryder?

Yeah, he answers.

His voice in my head lifts the curves of my lips up slightly and I run my hands through my hair a few times. Don't want to look like a slob if I end up seeing him soon.

Where are you?

Outside your door.

My eyes look straight ahead and see the white door. Ryder's just in the next room. Shivers run through my nerves. I take off the gold covers of the bed and find myself in the same thing as before, except I'm barefoot. Gross.

I remake the bed and turn off the dim lighted lamp beside the bed on a nightstand of the same wood as the dresser.

I walk to the door and grab the doorknob, taking a deep breath, I turn it and pull.

He sits against the wall, wearing a black shirt with a pair of jeans, casual. His head is low and his eyes are focused on the ground. He looks up and I feel myself falling into his deep, strong eyes. Almost a second later I snap myself out of it.

"Um, how long have you been here?"

"Since we got back and Wyatt quickly purchased this place. He's currently gone, he had to go close the offer and finish discussing it with the landlord. He told me that I could sit here until you woke up. I've been sitting here for two days since we got back."

"Seriously?" I ask in disbelief.

He did that for me?

"Nah, I walked around for a while and went to a club with Amber last night."

My heart drops from its high sense of happiness to disappointment. Player.

"Fine, call me names, but you should be thankful you have someone to tell you what's going on."

Oh my gosh, he can hear everything I've been saying. My face gets hot with embarrassment and I force the smile away. I turn the smile into the start of a glare, but from his expression, I'm pretty sure it looks nothing like a glare.

He grabs my hand and leads me out of the hallway and into a living area that stretches into a kitchen.

"Caroline, meet the penthouse. Your new home."

His hand gestures to the place. To the left are large windows that give a view from up high. Maybe seven stories. The living area has another chandelier, but this one looks silver, not gold like mine.
