Chapter 7
Caroline
I feel closed in and trapped, I'm back in the glass case again. I think they used the Spray on me, because there was nothing I remember after sitting on the mattress, observing my blue vein.
I also feel more electricity going through my body, but I don't flinch, they didn't knock me out so I can look at the scientists working and shoot them a look of hatred, right before they send me one back. Naomi is not among them, but I'm sure she wouldn't miss such an experiment.
Gosh, where are you, Wyatt?
I wish he had telepathy too, then he could actually tell me why he's not even here. It kills me not to know what's happening to him, even though he's a year older. That big boy can take care of himself...right?
The glass doors open. The first thing that catches my eye are a pair of silver-looking high heels, they don't seem to be a normal gray though, something like a bright metal, like the Sprays they have around here. I go from the shoes up until I see bright red lips.
I know they can hear me from in here, so I don't hold anything back.
"Gee, Naomi, it looks like you kissed a clown."
"Your opinion is of little importance to me," she says formally, pursing her lips together.
I can't help but stare at her incredibly, horrendous, red mouth, it does look like she kissed a clown. I laugh at her pursed lips that remind me of a very ripe tomato in the summertime. I had to do it for a class experiment, and even still, compared to the tomato, I think her lipstick is brighter.
"Why are you laughing when I'm just about to shock you with millions of watts, I don't think you'll enjoy it, and we will stop for nothing to get that stupid mineral out of you, even if it means death for some of us."
She refers to me as 'some of us'.
"Ross, would you mind to do the honors?" Naomi says and gestures her hands towards the red button on a machine.
I was so focused on Naomi's look, I haven't noticed that Ross slipped in as well. He stands a few paces behind Naomi. When she gestures for him to act, he doesn't move, stands still as a statue.
For a little while, he stands motionless, his face expressionless. I almost want him to just hit the darn lever or button, or whatever it is that'll send me into intense pain, instead of sitting in front of me, making me nervous and intimidating me. What he says next kind of surprises me. It's hard to think a worker here would ever disobey orders, then again, this is Naomi.
"I don't play your games, I don't want to be involved in something so cruel and dangerous, she's just a kid."
"I'm fifteen," I blurt out.
Embarrassment is the first emotion I feel after saying so. Heat rises to my face as I close my eyes, I definitely sound like a kid.
Ross rolls his eyes and looks somewhere else. I see his facial features, now that he doesn't have a mask or something to hide his face. It starts at the hazel-blond hair that is styled somehow, then to his broad, defined jaw. He's probably around Naomi's age, looking at his appearance. I can't exactly see how tall he is considering I'm lying down inside the glass case. I also can't quite tell the color of his eyes, or if he has freckles or not. I do notice he's a strongly built kind of guy. He wears something in between casual and formal.
"What happened? You used to love doing this stuff, loved to work with me." Naomi drags him over to the machine. "Can't you do it again?"
"No, I'm actually considering going on strike with that other kid."
Naomi stares at him with disbelief. "But what about us? What or who made you change your mind about working like this?"
"I just don't think kidnapping people for testing and harmful purposes is the right thing that I should be doing," Ross pauses and throws her a forceful look. "There was no 'us' and if there ever was, I'm out, I quit."
Wow! That was interesting.
Ross glances at me, strapped to the table and about to be shocked with forces of electricity I doubt I can withstand, then he turns, drops a small item on the floor and exits.
I actually think it's pretty funny that Naomi just got dumped, I only have a few minutes of life left, so why not enjoy it?
"Dang, you just got dissed," I say looking at Naomi's forlorn face.
"I've had it with you! I'll be happy when your body goes still, and not a single word ever escapes your mouth ever again!" she screams.
Her hand comes down hard on the red flashing button, I brace myself, thinking of my past, and hoping Wyatt doesn't end up like me too.
