It's been a week since medic arrived. He's been living in my spare room and has just got a job in the same hospital as me.
I was walking through the halls of the hospital, just off to my lunch break when someone tapped me on my shoulder. I turned round to see one of the old ladies I help care for on the ward.
"Gracie. What have I told you? You're meant to stay on the ward." I smiled.
"They give me this walker and tell me I should stay active and yet keep me in the ward. Stupid doctors don't know what they want." She laughed. She does this a lot. No one can make Gracie stay put. She knew her drip had wheels and she was off. She likes sitting in the cafe and people watching.
"Alright. Come on. I was just about to have lunch." I smiled holding the door open for her.
We sat at a table and ate lunch.
"I heard you humming a tune today dear. You seem happy."
"Yeh. Guess I'm just having a good week you know."
"There's a man isn't there." She smirked, quirking an eyebrow.
"No. Well. Someone I've known for a while was transferred to this hospital without notice and had nowhere to live so I let him live in my spare room." I explained.
"You like him though. Don't lie to me remember, I know that look you have."
"I guess I do. But this place is temporary until he gets a job back at his old hospital. I guess I don't want him to leave." I sighed, finishing off my cup of coffee.
"Then my dear. You'll have to give him a reason to stay." She grinned. Gracie has become like a grandmother to me. I never met mine, they died before I was born so this relationship I have with Gracie is nice.
We were about to get up when Medic walked over. "Speak of the devil and he shall appear." I laughed. "Good day doctor."
"Good Day." He greeted, carefully pushing his glasses up his nose. "I was just coming to inform you I will be back later tonight. Perhaps about 7 as opposed to 5." I looked across at Gracie who had her crossword pad open.
"6 six letter word, meaning an afternoon meal." She read.
"Dinner." I replied. She looked up at me with a smirk and discreetly pointed at Medic. I just laughed shaking my head. "That's okay doctor. I'm on the ward until 7 anyway." I smiled. "Someone has to manage the riff raff. I'll walk home with you. I know, I haven't got anything ready for dinner, would you like to join me? I know this GREAT Greek taverna that's just on the walk home."
"Ja. That sounds good." He smiled.
"Okay. Meet me here when you finish." With that he left again.
"He's a looker alright." She spoke nudging me as we got up to go back to the ward. "Kind of reminds me of my late husband. He was a British doctor in the war. He carries himself the same way." She reminisced.
Once on the ward I continued my day's work until I had to go and meet the medic. I changed out of my scrubs and into my normal clothes and waited outside the cafe. Medic came rounded the corner in the shirt and tie he has to wear during consultations and a pair of jeans. Ugh. This is making it harder to stop myself from falling for a man who is, technically speaking, just a fictional character.
"So uh. How's it going?" I asked, breaking the silence that had fallen between us.
"Good. I worked out that I should have enough money for all the components in a few months." He smiled. "Then I can get back to what I am best at."
"I thought it would take longer than that." I shrugged.
"As did I." He grinned, "wunderbar isn't it?"
"Yeh. Of course." I mumbled.
"Are you ok Fräulein?" He questioned.
"Oh uh. Yeh. I'm fine. I just remembered I have to get home, I have to feed Archie at a certain time. He's on these meds from the vet you see." I excused myself standing up, catching a nearby waiter, "you couldn't make this to go, I completely forgot I needed to be somewhere." He smiled and brought back my food in a box. "So sorry Medic." I sighed before leaving. It wasn't a complete lie. I do need to give Archie his meds but they're not so time specific. But I just wanted out, why'd I even remotely think I could make him want to stay. Being a normal doctor again must be killing him, it's probably so boring following all the rules again.
"Why would he want to stay eh Archie?" I muttered, handing my cat his food containing his meds, "I'm just being selfish aren't I? Stupid and selfish." I continued talking to him as I went about doing my chores. "Stupid that I fell for him, but it's hard not to I know him so well. I mean I named you after his bird." I laughed picking him up. "Isn't that right Archimedes? At least you don't try to make your home in bodies." I chuckled, "but I suppose bringing dead mice and stuff home counts."
"I just worked that out. You named your cat after my dove." A voice spoke from the door. I leapt from the couch in surprise.
"Oh. Uh yeh. Told you that you were my favourite character."
"Is He Okay?" He asked as Archie rubbed up against his legs.
"Yeh. He's on heart medication. As long as he gets the tablets he's fine." I smiled picking up the cat. "Well. I should try to get some sleep. I'm taking over on the ward at 5am so I need to go to bed." I walked towards my bedroom door. "See you tomorrow I guess." As I shut the door Archie jumped out of my arms and onto my bed. "Oh Archie I'm a mess." I sighed, falling face first onto my bed. "Maybe it'll be easier when he leaves. Back to fancying a video game character eh and not a handsome real man."
