"You're gonna be a Dad.." I smiled, looking at the floor, too nervous to look at the man in front of me.
"What?!" That didn't sound like the 'What?' Of surprise. That sounded angry. "How could something this inconvenient happen?!"
"Th-that time two weeks ago on Thursday... w-while on the battlefield..." I stuttered, backing towards the door.
"We can't have you compromised like this. You knew there was no actual feeling in this relationship." He smiled darkly, picking up a large syringe from his desk. "Don't worry. You won't feel anything."
Just as he grabbed my shirt in his gloved hand I jolted awake. I was covered in a cold sweat, I scrambled out of the arms of the doctor laying beside me. I ran into the bathroom, shutting and locking the door.
I splashed a little cold water on my face and stared into the mirror as I calmed down my breathing. Only to jump again when there came a knock at the door. "Schatz. What are you doing? It's 3:49 in the morning." I could hear the sleep still in his voice. "Are you okay?"
"Fine. Just a bad dream." I smiled walking out. He pulled me gently into his arms.
"I'm here if you need me. You know that." He whispered, guiding me back to bed. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't settle. I kept thinking of how badly he would take this news. Would he make me get rid of it? Would he get rid of me? I don't know. I can't keep it a secret much longer.
The next morning, by the time Medic's alarm went off I was already up and reading a book in an old rocking chair, I pushed my glasses up my nose as I turned the page. I only noticed he was awake when he cleared his throat. I looked up and saw him sitting in bed, staring at me with a smile. "You look like a mother sat like that." He grinned.
"Yeh. Funny that." I smiled, putting my book on the side and my glasses on top. "Could you imagine that in a life like this?" I laughed. "A kid growing up around mercenaries."
"We'd have to leave." He shrugged, getting out of bed and heading into the lab.
"No. No. I'd have to. The team need you. You're their only medic." I sighed. "and besides, you couldn't handle one week as working as a normal doctor." I laughed.
"No. Leave you as a single parent. It wouldn't be right. Anyway, let's hope it doesn't happen just yet. I have bigger plans for us between now and then." He grinned.
"Yeh. Let's hope." I mumbled walking back into his room. "I'm gonna go back to reading."
"Okay Schatz." He smiled, pulling various body parts from his fridge, scalpel in hand.
I sat back down, book in hand, placing my glasses back on my face. "Looks like you'll have to go, Little one." I sighed, gently rubbing my hand over my lower abdomen. "Or I could run away. Me and you would be alright wouldn't we?" I smiled as a tear rolled down my cheek. "This is all just some stress relief for him. I'm the only female on the base. He doesn't really love me. I know it. No matter what he says. He's a madman and he knows what will keep me around." I closed my book and quietly began packing my belongings that littered his room. I only took one of his things, a picture of the two of us, I took it with a camera I found in a storage cupboard. "We'll Go tonight. That way he never has to know about you." I cried as I pulled out a pen and paper, writing a quick goodbye.'Josef,
My apologies for leaving like this. I fear I can no longer work as a mercenary. I have become emotionally and physically compromised. Don't bother looking for me, all of your lives will be easier this way. It was fun serving with you all, you in particular.
Goodbye,
(Y/N)'That night I slipped out into the night, never to be found again. For a while I lived in hostels and b&b's but as I worked and started to earn more money I bought a plane ticket and moved away. I moved to Germany. It kept me close to Josef's memory and it was a language I knew.
I opened my own brauhaus, gave birth to my child and began to raise her all on my own. I was just clearing a table when two of my locals pushed in another man. "Brauhaus der Tauben ist wunderbar!" One shouted smiling widely. "Guten Tag Frau (Y/N)!" He grinned. By this time I had the two men's usual order on the bar. "Danke. Wie gehts?" He questioned.
"Eh. Müde." I yawned. I turned to the man who was pushed into the bar, he sat in a black hoodie, his face covered. He simply tapped his finger on the beer tap and said nothing. I just pulled the stein and took his money. If he didn't want to talk Who am I to judge. I turned back to my locals.
"Deine Tochter?" He questioned.
"Ja." I yawned as a cry pierced through the whole room. "Ah. Es tut mir leid!" I apologised to my bar of people. Most of them knew that I had to have my baby at work with me so didn't mind.
I came back with my daughter in my arms. I stood talking and feeding my little girl her bottle. Only now did hoodie man speak up.
"Sie ist schön." He mumbled.
"Danke." I smiled. She was beautiful, her hair as dark as her fathers but her eyes bright blue as opposed to Medic's grey.
"Wie heißt sie bitte?" He asked.
"Sie heißt Katharina."
"Katharina." He sighed.
"Ihr Vater?" He questioned. I just shook my head. I can't exactly say her father is a mercenary with questionable sanity who works in America and is a man she's never met. "Danke." He spoke, placing his empty stein on the bar and getting up.
"Wie heißen sie?" I asked before he walked out. He turned so I could slightly see his face, the round glasses perched on his nose shining in the sunlight.
"Josef." I froze in that moment. I couldn't move. I was snapped out of it as the infant in my arms let out a small laugh. It was like she knew. I went after the man stopping him before he could walk out the door. "What are you doing here Josef?! You should be in tuefort!" I cried.
"As should you!" He turned round, rage and hurt swimming in his eyes. "Emotionally and physically compromised?! Seeing someone outside the base more like!" He cried. "That why you left? So I wouldn't find you pregnant with another man's child?" His words hurt me but I can't blame him. That must be how this looks. "To think I allowed myself to love you." I said nothing, shocked that he actually did love me. He just scoffed and turned and walked away. I snapped out of my trance.
"She's yours!" I shouted after him. He stopped in his tracks.
"You left, the middle of the night, you left while pregnant with my child. Why?" He still sounded so hurt.
"I thought I was just a bit of fun to you. We'd have sex and you'd go back to work. You just knew what to say to keep me wanting to come back." I shrugged. "When I found out I was having a child I was afraid, I thought you'd want me to get rid of her. To keep us both able to keep working."
"You think that low of me?"
"No. Well. I did. It broke me to leave. I love you but I was scared. I didn't want you to give up your job for me like you said. You also said you hoped it didn't happen. You had bigger plans first, I hope they went well for you."
"They didn't. I needed you for my plans to go ahead. You should know I'd give up everything for you." He looked away.
"What were your plans?"
"To ask you for your hand. Everything was set, all the others knew. I wanted to ask you to marry me before thinking about a family. I knew Mann co was breaking down and we'd soon be no longer needed so I started setting my life in order, hence being distant." He stated. His eyes wandering to the face of the infant in my arms. "But obviously someone had other ideas." He smiled sadly. I simply pressed the baby into his arms.
"No more Mann co?" I asked, Josef simply nodded. "No more mercenaries?" He nodded again. I guided him back into the bar. "Then please for both of our sanities stay." I smiled.
"You won't run away this time?" He laughed, resting his forehead to our daughter's.
"You're not getting rid of me. Ever. No matter how hard you try." I laughed, standing on my tiptoes gently placing a kiss on his lips. "So how are your waiter skills?"-Jadieelynchx
