Behind enemy lines, limited ammo, no nearby team mates and I'm the only one who can grab the intel. I ideally want backup but I can outrun most of them anyway right.
I grab the intel and make for the door. I just hope i don't run into... "hey there toots." Yeh. Him.
"Scout. Hey. Fancy seeing you here." I smiled leaning against the doorframe. "Now. How's about you let me take this intel here and we can both be on our way and get on with our lives." I grinned.
"Not gonna happen." He smirked, pulling out his bat. "But I'll give ya a three second head start." Before he could say another word I took off running, the briefcase wasn't helping matters being so heavy. Scout quickly overtook me and turned to me, bat raised. I couldn't stop in time so took a hard swing to the ribs, dropping to the ground. He leaned over me "Yano. You're quite an attractive gal. But... you're a blu so... I'm over it." He raised his bat again, I had no other choice but to call for help. What could make my day worse?
Suddenly I heard the Scout cry out in pain then land on the ground beside me. A large syringe sticking out of his chest. I looked around but couldn't see the man behind my continuing safety. I simply picked up the case and continued running until running back into that same Scout, evidently on his way back from respawn.
"Alright. Let's try this again." He smiled. "And this time. You got no medic to bail you out."
"Ready for you this time." I grinned, pulling out my gun, throwing the briefcase onto my back in the process. "So? Think you can take me Scout."
I should learn to watch my mouth. I took a fair beating after that. I could feel my ribs broken, my nose bleeding, my lip split and most likely some internal damage. I ended up playing dead. It was the only way I could get him to drop his guard. When he got closer I grabbed his wrist, slitting his throat with the small knife in my pocket.
I dragged myself back to base, the case still on my back. I threw the case onto the table and hobbled back to my room. I opened my bedside cabinet and pulled out my small pack of bandages and some cotton wool and saline solution I pinched off of Medic some time ago. I dabbed the cotton in the solution and cleaned any open wounds. I then tightly wrapped the bandages around my chest, but not too tight that I couldn't breathe or move, and that was it for the night. I got into bed and slept through, that is until Soldier was banging pots and pans outside my room.
I hauled myself out of bed and down the hall to the kitchen. I was stopped halfway by Medic. He said nothing, just took my chin in his hand, examining my bruised and still bloody face. "Tsk. Stupid girl." He muttered, beginning to walk off.
"Well I didn't see you grabbing the intel! Aren't you meant to be there so we don't get beaten to within an inch of our lives?! Helping those of us on the front lines!" I called after him.
"You run off straight for the intel. This is a two way street. You be there for me just as much as I am for you."
"Ugh!" I threw my hands up in frustration. "You infuriate me you know that!" I turned to walk away but decided I wasn't finished. "You evidently have something against me. You never help me, you talk about me running off and going without you and yet Scout does the same! You still help him! I have to heal myself most of the time. Even when we get back, I have my own healing supplies seeing as you don't care. So why do you hate me?!"
"I don't!" He shouted back. The way he said it though, it was like I'd just wounded him. He quickly regained composure. "I don't hate you. It's difficult Fräulein." He sighed before pushing his glasses up his nose and disappearing into his lab, locking the door behind him. That last bit I didn't expect.
I pushed these thoughts aside and continued my day until the battle tomorrow.
I sat cleaning my weapon wincing with every move, my broken ribs giving me hell. A large gash on my collarbone also kept opening, every time I moved my shoulders too much, blood began seeping through my bandages staining my fresh blue shirt. "Ugh. Seriously?!" I exclaimed as the blast doors opened. However, before I turned around to run out my pain was gone. I looked down, the bandages were gone as were my wounds. I turned again to thank the only one who could've healed me but he was gone.
Again the battle was long and bloody, and the reds came out victorious but this time I had a near constant health top up every so often. Could it have finally sunk in that I am worth healing and that I'm actually an important member of the team? Or was it what he blurted out yesterday before disappearing back into his lab? Either way I was glad of his healing, I don't think I was sent back to respawn at all.
The rest of the day was as normal, I didn't see Medic after that, I decided to hang out with sniper instead. We sat on the roof talking and messing around. He's more relaxed with me than he is around the others. He'll tell jokes, talk about himself and generally relax and take time out. It's nice, seeing him less aloof. Now if only I can get a certain doctor to be like this. "Yano what?" Sniper spoke up, leaning back on his elbows. "We should do this more often." He smiled.
"Yeh. This is fun." I sighed, leaning my head on his shoulder. "It's so relaxing not having to worry about-"
"Fräulein (y/n) you left Your door open and scout got in and-" medic burst through the door but stopped midway through his statement. "Herr Sniper. Entschuldigung. Bitte. Pardon my intrusion." Before I could say anything he turned and fled.
"Sorry Sniper." I excused myself, standing up and brushing any dirt off my jeans. "Best go find out what that little prick has done to my room or what he's taken." I laughed.
"No worries Shiela. Same time next week?" He smiled, replacing his hat atop his head.
"You're on!" I called back as I ran down the stairs back into the base. Before I could make it to my room I heard a loud crash from med bay. I stood next to the door listening in.
"Dummkopf! Blöd, blöd dummkopf!" He shouted, then another crash. Evidently things being thrown around the lab. "She thought you hated her! Of course she'd fall for one of the others!" This time there was a dull cracking sound, followed by smashing glass. "All I had to do was be nice! Couldn't even do that!" It almost sounded like crying now. "No, pushing her away was easier." He sighed. "It's only love. A pathetic chemical imbalance, it will fade over time." I opened the door but the creaky hinges gave me away. "GET OUT!" He spun around to face me, launching a scalpel directly at me. Thankfully it missed me and buried itself into the wooden doorframe mere inches from my neck. As soon as he recognised my face his rage filled expression dropped into one of pure shock. "Fräulein. I could've killed you. Bitte, you'll have to forgive my short temper, I though you were one of the others." It was only now I got a proper look around the room, utensils strewn across the floor, shards of broken glass both phials and the mirror that hung above the sink in the corner.
"Very short temper by the looks of things." It was then I noted a sound that not dissimilar to water slowly dripping onto the floor. I looked down at medic's feet and behind him was a small pool of some kind of liquid, slightly thicker than water. Blood. He was standing as always with his hands held behind his back but that was where the blood was coming from. I walked towards him picking up stuff as I went.
"Oh don't worry. I can clear up." He reassured, "you just go and make sure Scout did no major damage to your possessions." I ignored him and continued placing the sharp implements onto a tray and onto his desk still walking towards him. "What are you doing?"
"Trying to help." I pulled his hand from behind his back and lo and behold it was bleeding profusely, shards of glass still imbedded in his skin.
"I told you I got annoyed." I looked away pulling his hand from my grasp.
"And punching something was the best way out?" I asked.
"It was either the mirror or your boyfriend. I know which one you'd rather it be." He snapped. "Go on. He'll be wondering where you are."
"You can't seriously be talking about Sniper?!" I laughed. "I'm more like his psychiatrist than his girlfriend! Every week we meet up on the roof and talk about life and how he's doing, yeh we mess around and just sit together but that's it. It's a little bit of comfort to him." I sighed pinching the bridge of my nose. "Before becoming a Merc I had a doctorate in psychology, just so happens that Mann co offered me more money and I was in a bad place at the time. Hence being here."
"I didn't know this." He looked away, rather embarrassed now.
"No. You and sniper are the only ones who know. Okay?" I sat up on the examination table, so I was roughly at eye level with the tall doctor. "And I also heard what you were saying earlier. About your 'chemical imbalance' as you called it. Feelings aren't a weakness. If you love someone and push them away without explanation they're bound to think you hate them."
"Ja, Well..." he trailed off looking away while I bandaged his hand.
"You gonna tell her or not?" I raised an eyebrow, turning his head, making him look at me.
"She wouldn't want a broken psychopath like me." He shrugged.
"Give it a go." I smiled.
"I love you." He blurted out. "That sounds stupid I know. You hardly know me, but falling for you was as easy as breathing."
"It's not stupid. The heart wants what it wants. Just so happens that mine wants you too." I grinned.
"Mit mir allein kann ich nur glücklich sein."
"Unfair. I don't speak German." I sighed, sitting on his couch, waiting for him to join me.
"I will teach you." He smiled. "One of the many things we can do together."
